Economics

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is designed to provide students with the tools and concepts necessary to understand our modern economy, to function more effectively as citizens, and to make sound decisions. A major in economics opens the door to a wide variety of jobs in business, government, finance, and the professions. Economics is particularly useful for those students who plan to enter public service or law, or who plan to go on to graduate study.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared Coggin College of Business major should visit the Coggin Career Management Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). Economics students are encouraged to take GEO 2420 Cultural Geography when selecting General Education coursework.
  • Economics students should take College Algebra (or higher) and Elementary Statistics when selecting General Education coursework. These math courses are required prerequisites for some upper-level Economics courses.
  • All BA students are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office.
  • A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.
  • Economics students are required to complete an international academic experience as one of their Major Electives. Students must select one from the following: 3 credit UNF study abroad courses approved by the department chair or 3 credit economics course (3000/4000 level) abroad. This requirement may be replaced with another 3 credit economics course (3000/4000 level) upon approval by the department chair in the case of extenuating circumstances. Visit the Coggin study abroad advisor, and the Coggin Study Abroad webpage for a current list of Coggin study abroad opportunities.
  • ECO3701 Contemporary Intl Economics and ECP3703 Managerial Economics may not be used in the major.
  • GEO3502 Economic Geography is the only GEO prefix course that will satisfy a Major Elective.
  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) and by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation. For additional information visit the Coggin Academic Advising Office webpage.
