Interdisciplinary Opportunities at UNF
Education in the 21st century is changing. It is evolving by virtue of both new discoveries and entirely new fields of knowledge that require the capacity to solve complex problems by drawing on concepts, methods, and information from multiple disciplines. This increasingly interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge is widely recognized as essential to the new employment opportunities in the knowledge economy that is expanding worldwide. To help prepare students for these opportunities, the College of Arts and Sciences offers the following interdisciplinary options for majors and minors:
The College of Arts and Sciences offers a dynamic range of interdisciplinary programs designed to prepare students for the complexities of the 21st-century workplace and world. These programs invite students to explore connections across traditional academic boundaries and enable students to pursue innovative paths that solve problems and improve lives.
Interdisciplinary Studies Major
The Interdisciplinary Studies program of study allows students to design a personalized course of study that aligns with their unique academic interests and career goals. Students may choose from faculty-curated themes (Environmental Studies or Film) or propose their own program of study that integrates courses from multiple disciplines and academic perspectives. Admission to the program is selective and requires a proposal outlining the student’s academic theme and objectives, subject to review and approval by program coordinator.
Bachelor of General Studies (BGS)
The Bachelor of General Studies is a flexible, interdisciplinary degree designed for students seeking an academic path aligned with their personal or professional goals. This program offers four disciplinary concentrations from which students can choose: Humanities and Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, STEM, or Education Studies. This degree is ideal for students with prior college credit or those returning to complete a degree. Our BGS emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application through a required capstone experience. The BGS prepares graduates for diverse career opportunities in fields such as project management, human services, analyst positions, and more.
Interdisciplinary Minors
The College offers a range of interdisciplinary minors that encourages students to explore topics through multiple academic lenses. These minors are designed to complement any major and support a student’s broader intellectual and professional goals. Minor options include Digital Humanities, International Studies, Interdisciplinary Disability Studies, Jewish Studies, Law, Politics and Ethics, Professional and Public Writing, and Social Welfare, to name a few. Each minor offers students a chance to engage with contemporary issues, develop cross-disciplinary insights, and prepare for careers in a wide range of fields from public service and education to law, healthcare, and the arts.
