Institute of Environmental Research and Education Overview
The Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) is an interdisciplinary institute that serves students and faculty from all six UNF colleges. The mission of IERE is to provide opportunities for environmental research and education, by leading interdisciplinary programs that enhance the student experience, prepare students for the workforce and or graduate school, and increase environmental scholarship and innovation.
IERE offers a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science that promotes hands-on learning opportunities, where students can gain practical experience through fieldwork, lab research, and internships. The program is also comprised of expert faculty, where students can learn from experienced professors who are leaders in their fields.
Students choose one of two concentrations:
- Environmental Science/Environmental Natural Sciences (BS)
- Environmental Science/Environmental Principles & Practice (BS)

Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) Academic Policies
Transient or Concurrent Enrollment
Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) students are eligible to earn credit at another accredited post-secondary institution for transfer into the Environmental Science BS degree program. Lower-level students can take up to 7 credits at another institution. Upper-level courses specific to the student's major must be approved by the program director. Students may NOT take courses at another institution in their final semester at UNF. IERE students who wish to take courses at another institution must receive permission from Academic Advising and complete the electronic transient form prior to the semester they wish to take the course.
Advising Requirement
Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) students must meet with Academic Advising to review their degree evaluation upon admittance to the university or upon transferring to the major. Students will receive an email notification to set up a meeting with Academic Advising prior to registration and an advising hold will be placed on the students’ account to ensure they meet with Advising in a timely manner.
Academic Standing- Probation and Suspension
Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) students who meet the University's criteria for academic probation will have a registration hold placed on their account preventing future registrations until they meet with an Academic Advisor.
IERE students who meet the University's criteria for academic suspension will be placed on academic suspension and will not be allowed to enroll in courses for a period of one academic semester. IERE students who are suspended and desire to lift the suspension must submit an appeal to resume their program of study, which will be evaluated by the IERE Suspension Review Committee or Program Director.
