Dr. Herbert Kotzab, Director

Headshot of Dr. KotzabDr. Herbert Kotzab, one of the foremost authorities in transportation and logistics, has joined Coggin College as the Director of Crowley Center for Transportation and Logistics and as the CSX Transportation Eminent Scholar in Transportation and Logistics. Dr. Kotzab comes to UNF from the University of Bremen in Germany.  

He has developed an esteemed reputation as one of the foremost authorities in research and education in the transportation, logistics and supply-chain industry. Dr. Kotzab has a Ph.D. from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration where he also earned his Master of Science Degree.  

Prior to arriving at UNF, Dr. Kotzab developed an outstanding career at some of the most distinguished business universities in Europe. In an academic career spanning three decades, Dr. Kotzab served as a full professor and Chair of Logistics Management at the University of Bremen, full professor in the Department of Operations Management at the Copenhagen Business School and research associate in the Department of Retail Marketing at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration In Austria. 

In addition, he was a visiting professor at other institutions ranging from Italy to Scotland to Malaysia to the United States to other locales. Dr. Kotzab has received varied awards and recognitions and participated in research projects and industry engagement involving consultancy work. He was also active in editorial contributions to multiple academic and industry publications and journals. 

Dr. Kotzab’s expertise includes: strategic logistics and supply chain operations; digitalization in the supply chain; global supply chain management; marketing channels and strategic distribution management; retail marketing, retail logistics and efficient consumer response; service operations; and supply chain analysis and logistics audit. 

Dr. Kotzab takes over as Director of the Coggin College Crowley Center for Transportation and Logistics at a critical point in its evolution. Founded in 2021 following a $2.5-million endowment from Crowley Maritime, the Center’s mission is to be a world leader in research and education in the transportation, logistics and supply-chain industry. 

UNF Coggin College of Business Dean Richard Buttimer was fully aware of Dr. Kotzab’s world-renowned reputation and actively sought to recruit and bring Dr. Kotzab to our campus in Jacksonville, Florida. David Swanson, Associate Professor and Former Interim Director

Professor Swanson joined the Coggin College of Business in 2012. He teaches three graduate classes for students pursuing an MBA or MS in Logistics and Supply Chain management, including strategic logistics management, graduate survey of transportation, and the graduate thesis. He also teaches undergraduate classes including logistics information systems and logistics management Professor Swanson takes pride in preparing students for professional jobs.

Professor Swanson is currently the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Journal, the oldes academic logistics journal recently passing sixty years. His research explores how information and technology advance transportation, logistics and supply chain management. He has published in the Journal of Business Logistics, the Journal of Retailing, the International Journal of Logistics Management, IEEE: Engineering Management Review; International Journal of Production Economics; Transportation Journal, Benchmarking: an International Journal, Ethics and Behavior, the Supply Chain Quarterly, the World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research, the Supply Chain Management Review, Supply Chain Management: an International Journal, Supply Chain Management Review, Supply Chain Forum: an International Journal, and others.

For twenty years prior to becoming a professor Dr. Swanson worked in the private sector specializing in warehouse management systems and automation, and worked in corporate logistics for Walmart and Pearle Vision.
