Graduate Non-Degree Seeking Applicants

The Graduate Non-Degree Seeking application option is designed for students who have earned a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by an accepted institutional accreditor and would like to take graduate-level coursework without being admitted to a degree-seeking graduate program. This option can be a great fit for individuals looking to explore graduate coursework, pursue professional development, or meet specific educational goals outside of a graduate degree program.

Students who wish to temporarily take courses at UNF before transferring those credits back to their home institution should visit the Graduate Transient at UNF website for additional information. 

Please note that this option is not intended for applicants who need to complete undergraduate prerequisite courses prior to beginning a graduate program. If a graduate program director has advised you to complete undergraduate prerequisites, you should apply as an undergraduate non-degree seeking student at least one term before your intended graduate program start date. Please note that the undergraduate application fee is required for non-degree seeking undergraduate applications, as it differs entirely from the graduate application fee. However, any transcripts on file are available to both the undergraduate and graduate admissions offices. Therefore, if transcripts have been submitted to the graduate admissions office, the undergraduate admissions office will have access to them and vice versa.

Not all programs accept Graduate Non-Degree Seeking applicants. It is highly recommended that potential students contact the Graduate Program Director of the program in which they would like to enroll. Enrollment eligibility for Graduate Non-Degree Seeking students is based on several factors, including, but not limited to, permission from the program director and instructor of record, and class capacity. Degree-earning students have priority for course enrollment. If admitted in a Graduate Non-Degree Seeking status, enrollment is not guaranteed every term.
  • Deadlines

    Standard Graduate Non-Degree Seeking deadlines (programs reserve the right to turn off the application earlier than these dates):

    • Fall - August 10
    • Spring - December 10
    • Summer - April 30

    Nursing Graduate Non-Degree Seeking deadlines:

    • Fall - July 1 
    • Spring - November 1
    • Summer - March 15

  • What is the process for applying to a non-degree seeking program?

    If the Graduate Program Director agrees, you can enroll as a Graduate Non-Degree Seeking student and complete the UNF Graduate Non-Degree Seeking Application.

    1. Log in or create an application account
    2. Click the Start New Application link at the bottom
    3. Select the Graduate Admissions Application option
    4. Select Graduate Prerequisites and Non-Degree
    5. To complete the application, click Open Application
      • To apply as Graduate Non-Degree Seeking to take graduate-level courses outside a degree program, or graduate prerequisite courses to prepare for a graduate program, you must select "I wish to take graduate-level coursework non-degree. I plan to pursue a graduate degree later." as your enrollment plans.
      • For your program of study, you will need to select the Grad App: [major] option of the program you are interested in; i.e., if you wish to take psychology courses, you would select "Grad App: Psychology, N".
    6. Upload a copy of your transcript(s)

    7. Submit the $30 non-refundable application fee

  • Once admitted, what do I do?
    1. Provide an official transcript from the institution where the bachelor's degree was earned.
    2. Clear holds in order to register for classes. Graduate Non-Degree Seeking students are only allowed to register just prior to the start of each term.
    3. Complete the residency declaration if applying for Florida residency for tuition purposes. You will receive email communication on completing this process. It must be completed by the last business day before the start of classes.
    4. Pay the student bill.
      Note: Students are not sent a bill for tuition. Refer to Student Financial Services for deadlines and payment submission information.
  • Who should consider a graduate non-degree seeking program?

    The graduate non-degree seeking option provides a flexible way to take graduate-level courses without committing to a degree program. This option may be a good fit for students who:

    • Need to complete graduate prerequisites before being admitted to a graduate program.
    • Want to explore a field of study before committing to a certificate or degree.
    • Are returning to school after time away and would like to ease back into graduate coursework.
    • Wish to enhance their professional knowledge or develop new skills for career advancement.
    • Are considering graduate study and want to experience the academic environment before applying to a degree-seeking program.
  • Can non-degree seeking coursework count toward a graduate degree or certificate?
    Yes, up to 12 credit hours of graduate coursework taken in a graduate non-degree seeking status may be applied to a degree-seeking graduate program. After taking 12 credit hours, a registration hold will be placed on the account, and the Graduate Post-Baccalaureate Memorandum of Understanding Form will be required to lift the hold.
  • Are graduate non-degree seeking students eligible for financial aid?
    No, graduate students who are pursuing a non-degree seeking program are not eligible for financial aid.
  • Can I repeat a course while I am a non-degree seeking student?

    No, courses may not be repeated if you have already received academic credit for the same course at the undergraduate or graduate level. Course equivalency is determined by subject and course number.
