Counselor Education in School Counseling

Overview

Successful completion of the Master of Education in Counselor Education in School Counseling results in certification for PK-12 school guidance counseling in the State of Florida. The School Counselors: Supporters of Academic Rigor (SOAR) program is a cohort program with 20-30 students selected annually. The program consists of 48 semester hours of core and major requirements. The program consists of 60 credit hours. Across program coursework, students will complete over 700 hours of supervised field experiences over three to four semesters.

Prerequisites

The amount of prerequisite course work will depend on the individual student's educational background and ranges from 3-9 hours. Please speak with the graduate program director.

The following items must be submitted no later then the deadline posted above. Incomplete applications with outstanding requirements, or those post-marked after the posted deadline, are subject to cancellation. Once an application has been canceled, the decision can not be reversed. Applicants may apply for the next application cycle.

  • University Requirements
    • A baccalaureate degree from an accepted institutional accreditor, or its equivalent from a foreign institution, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in all work attempted in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study.
    • Transcripts, and foreign evaluations if applicable, from all post-secondary institutions attended. Admitted students will be prompted to provide official copies.

    • Three letters of recommendation
      • Address applicants qualifications for success in graduate school
      • Must be on official letter head (if applicable) and have an original signature (electronic signatures are not acceptable)
    • Passing GKT or GRE test scores
      • If submitting GKT scores, please contact the Graduate School after they have been submitted
      • A copy of a current FL Professional Educator's Certificate will also suffice as proof of having taken the GKT; please contact the Graduate School after it has been submitted
      • GRE scores may be used as an alternative to GKT scores
        • Must be taken within the last 5 years
        • 151 verbal, 147 quantitative and 4 out 6 analytical writing     
    • Applicants must complete a SOAR portfolio and interview with a SOAR Selection Team prior to admission
    • Applicants seeking admission to a state approved educator preparation program must demonstrate mastery of general knowledge for admission to the program by providing passing scores of the GK, CLAST, NTE or GRE exams
    • An applicant who does not meet the stated criteria for admission to the school counseling program may request review of his/her application by submitting a letter detailing the reasons that an exception to the admission policy should be granted
      • Should be submitted to the graduate program director prior to the closing date for receipt of applications
      • The letter will become part of the application and be reviewed during the student selection process

    UNF undergraduates applying through the Express Application portal will be required to submit the below documents directly to the graduate program director. Questions should be directed to the graduate program director.
