Biomedical Sciences Research Internships

U-BRI - Undergraduate Biomedical Research Internship

Academic Year Internships at the Mayo Clinic Florida are open to University of North Florida undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students interested in careers in the medical or biomedical/ biochemical/ pharmacological research fields.

Internships will be full academic year-long projects involving laboratory research (Undergraduate Biomedical Research Internships – U-BRI) under the direction of a Principal Investigator at the Mayo Clinic Florida, and under the supervision of UNF faculty. Please note that this internship does not have a clinical component and will not provide an opportunity for shadowing physicians.

Students applying must be full-time UNF students in good standing and have completed either General Biology 3 (BCS2012C) OR Organic Chemistry 1 (CHM 2210). Techniques used in the basic science laboratories at the Mayo Clinic Florida include those within the fields of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and computational biology. Therefore, upper-level courses related to the fields of research are recommended, but not required.

Complete applications received by the due date will be reviewed by a committee consisting of UNF faculty and administrators.  The decisions of the UNF committee will be announced by the early April.  Mayo Clinic Florida will then contact students to schedule interviews by early May.  Successful applicants will work at the Mayo Clinic Florida during the fall and spring semesters of the next academic year.  Acceptance by the UNF committee does not guarantee placement in a research project at the Mayo Clinic.

Interns will be required to sign and abide by the terms of the Internship Agreement as well as fulfilling the requirements of the Mayo Clinic Florida to work at their facility. Mayo Clinic may require full vaccination against COVID-19 and Influenza for employees. Students accepted for the internship should expect to devote a minimum of 20 hours per week during standard Monday-Friday business hours to working at the Mayo Clinic Florida.

Each successful applicant will be required to register for a minimum of 1 hour of internship credit during each semester of the internship. As many as 12 credit hours can be used toward the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree. The average UBRI student enrolls in 3-4 internship credits per semester. When applying, you should develop a plan for your Fall registration that can be easily modified to incorporate these credits and the required time commitment.

Applications are due March 13, 2026 for placement into a research lab in the following fall and spring semesters. Successful applicants must register for credits using BSC 4941.

A U-BRI Information session will be help on Friday February 27, 2026 at 3pm in the Biology lecture Hall (59/1701). We will give an overview of the project, and current and past U-BRI students will be on hand to describe their experiences and the time requirements of this program. Please attend if you are interested in the program.
