Coastal and Marine Biology Public Outreach

Conserving the Earth’s water resources requires the involvement of an ocean-literate and well-informed public. Because of this, the UNF Coastal and Marine Biology Flagship Program is committed to increasing public awareness about coastal and marine biology and the threats that our oceans face. We do this in a number of ways, which are described below:

Brotman Family Public Lecture Series in Coastal and Marine Biology

Through the generous support of Sol and Leslie Brotman, the UNF Coastal and Marine Biology Flagship Program hosts a free annual public lecture by a distinguished speaker involved in coastal and marine biology research and conservation. This year’s speaker is Dr. Adam Summers, Professor of Biology and Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington who also served as Science Consultant for Pixar Animation Studios’ hit movies Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Dr. Summers will speak about The Science of Nemo and Dory on April 6, 2017 at 7 p.m. at UNF’s Robinson Theatre.

Coastal Science Café

Starting in Spring 2017, the UNF Coastal and Marine Biology Flagship Program will begin to host a monthly science café focused on ocean-related topics with a special emphasis on issues important to residents on Florida’s First Coast. These will be casual, intimate events situated at local brewpubs and eateries, and open to all interested parties! Stay tuned for more information about these events!

Local presentations, festivals, school visits, and media outreach

UNF Coastal and Marine Biology Flagship Program faculty and students regularly give public presentations for local clubs, environmental groups, libraries, institutions, and ocean-themed fairs, and often visit area schools and colleges. We also regularly contribute to media coverage on ocean-related topics and have been featured in both local and national media pieces. Please contact us if you are interested in featuring our work or expertise.
