UNF Eclipse Party

The Physics Department and Astronomy Club are hosting a viewing of the partial solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024.

The University of North Florida Department of Physics and Astronomy Club invite the campus community and public to celebrate the upcoming solar eclipse. The UNF Eclipse Watch Party will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at the J.B. Coxwell Amphitheater.

Action News Jax will hand out free ISO-approved solar eclipse glasses at the event. Physics students and faculty will have solar telescopes for viewing and fun activities for kids and families. If you plan to stay for the entire eclipse, please bring chairs or blankets to sit on. The event is free but parking at UNF in Lot 18 costs $2. A parking permit can be purchased at a Pay-by-Plate kiosk or the smartphone Flowbird app.

Activities include:

  • Safely view the Sun with eclipse glasses and solar telescopes
  • Photograph the eclipse
  • Make your own eclipse art and "sun clock"
  • View the solar spectrum

If you have any questions about the event, contact the UNF physics department at (904) 620-2729, or e-mail Prof. Jack Hewitt.

Ideas for how to safely view the solar eclipse can be found on the American Astronomical Society's website.

Details of the eclipse timing can be found at TimeAndDate.com.

Note: If you won't be able to make our eclipse party to get free eclipse glasses, you can still observe the eclipse safely using pinhole projection or building your own $1 safe solar viewer. Never stare at the Sun!
