Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Outreach Program

Our outreach program’s primary purpose is the recruitment of high school students into the chemistry or biochemistry program as a major or minor at UNF. A secondary goal is the recruitment of high school students into UNF science programs that require considerable chemistry coursework. Outreach activities also involve lower division grade school students. Various outreach activities that our faculty are involved in include:

  • American Chemical Society activities that support K-12 education (Explorathon, Chemistry Olympiad, High school teacher recognition)
  • Involvement with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) consortium which works to advance professional development for K-12 science teachers, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents, so students can learn and achieve at higher levels
  • Inviting high school teachers and their students to sit in on actual General Chemistry lectures and participate in laboratory activities
  • Inviting high school teachers and their students to attend weekly Chemistry Department science seminars
  • Provide guest speakers at elementary and high schools including chemistry demonstrations
  • Judging at science fairs
  • Participation in National Lab Day
  • Mentoring high school students including tutoring, advice on science fair projects, student research at UNF and related activities
