Nature & Health Center Initiatives

Nature As Medicine
At the new Nature and Health Center at UNF, the concept of "nature as medicine" is central to its mission of promoting holistic well-being through environmental connection. Grounded in interdisciplinary research and community engagement, the Center explores how time spent in natural settings can enhance physical, mental, and social health. Through programs, partnerships, and evidence-based initiatives, it encourages practices like nature-based mindfulness, outdoor physical activity, and ecological restoration as therapeutic tools. By integrating public health, environmental science, and behavioral theory, the Center positions nature not just as a backdrop for wellness, but as an active agent in healing and prevention.

Nature Indoor Healing
In addition to outdoor environments, the Nature and Health Center at UNF is advancing research and innovation in indoor nature-based healing, recognizing that Americans spend nearly 90% of their time indoors. This initiative focuses on transforming built environments—such as schools, workplaces, hospitals, and homes—into spaces that actively support human health and well-being. Through interdisciplinary research and strategic partnerships with industry leaders in architecture, design, and health technology, the Center explores how elements like natural light, biophilic design, indoor plants, and nature-inspired materials can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall wellness. By bridging science and practice, the Center aims to redefine how indoor spaces are designed, making them more responsive to human needs and environmental sustainability.
