Danny Gottlieb

Professor, Drums

Danny Gottlieb has amassed a prolific resume: He has recorded on more than 500 CDs, including 12 Grammy nominations and four Grammy award winners. He has performed or recorded with some of the greatest musicians in the world, including Pat Metheny, John Mclaughlin, Gil Evans, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin and many more. In addition, for the past 18 years, Danny, along with his percussionist wife Beth, have been members of actor/ bassist/ philanthropist Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band, performing more than 530 concerts in support of Military charities through the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Danny has also authored three world-acclaimed drumming textbooks: The Evolution of Jazz Drumming; Harold Jones Musical Interpretation of Big Band Swing Drumming; and the 2022 release, Terry Gibbs and Mel Lewis- The Art of Dream Band Drumming. Danny has also achieved the rank of full Professor and archived the life’s work of UNF Jazz department founder Rich Matteson and legendary NYC concert promoter Jack Kleinsinger, available through UNF’s digital commons platform sponsored by the Carpenter library. Through Danny’s efforts, Mr. Kleinsinger was awarded an honorary doctorate by UNF for his achievements, and the donation of his archives.

A graduate of the University of Miami, Gottlieb brings 50 years of professional experience, musical diversity, and enthusiasm to the UNF Jazz Faculty. He is an active clinician and endorser for Zildjian Cymbals, DW Drums, Remo Drum Heads, Hot Sticks, and Alternate Mode Products.
