Ospreys Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of North Florida is organizing an undergraduate research conference, Ospreys Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, on April 21-22, 2023. The regional conference is open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members. It will be a great opportunity for all attendees to meet and present their latest research results in mathematics and statistics. All talks will be accessible for undergraduate students. The major goals of the conference are to facilitate student intellectual development, improve student research and presentation skills, enhance research at the undergraduate level, help prepare students for their professional careers, and foster mentoring between undergraduate students and their faculty research advisors.

Dr. Michael J. Hirsch is a proud West Chester University of Pennsylvania alumnus with a B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science. He holds an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Operations Research focus) from the University of Florida.

Dr. Hirsch served as Senior Principal Scientist for Raytheon Technologies until 2014. While at Raytheon, he led small and large engineering teams, developed cutting-edge research, and transitioned that research into fielded programs for the Department of Defense. In 2014, he founded ISEA TEK, where he continues to serve as President and Chief Technologist. The company develops technologies using mathematically rigorous techniques from operations research, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. In the past nine years, Dr. Hirsch has personally grown ISEA TEK and has been awarded multiple government contracts from the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Air Systems Command, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The company has also worked with several Fortune 100 companies. In 2022, Dr. Hirsch founded and serves as CEO of the software development company TOXEUS Systems. The company develops cloud-based technologies to solve the world’s most challenging optimization problems.

Dr. Hirsch has published 58 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings, edited three books, holds five patents, and has presented his research 96 times at national and international conferences. He has received numerous awards throughout his life, including: the University of Florida Gator100 Award (2023) and the Raytheon Mentoring Excellence Award (2013). Dr. Hirsch will also be the recipient of the West Chester University Distinguished Alumni Award in April 2023.

Title: A not-so random walk through the world of operations research

Abstract: Throughout the world, optimization problems abound. They are found in mundane tasks and monumental challenges. They are encountered in man-made systems and in nature. Some of these problems are easy to solve; some quite complex. In this presentation, we will begin with an overview of operations research, discuss some examples of optimization that is present in nature, and finally explore some interesting real-world optimization problems.
