PORL Research Ethics

The PORL is dedicated to maintaining high standards of scientific competence and integrity in conducting research and in our relations with survey respondents and our clients. All our work is performed in accordance with the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) standards. The Public Opinion Research Lab is proud to be a member of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). AAPOR is the top institution for public opinion and research professionals. As members of AAPOR, the PORL's goal is to support sound and ethical practices in the conduct of survey and public opinion research. Moreover, the PORL is a charter member of the AAPOR Transparency Initiative, which seeks to improve the transparency of methodology and survey-based findings amongst research organizations.

The PORL is also a proud member of the Association of Academic Survey Research Organizations (AASRO). This organization is comprised of academic survey centers housed in universities. Its aim is to support academic survey research, promote best practices in survey methodology and research integrity, and to help educate the next generation of academic survey researchers.

All research is reviewed and approved by UNF's Institutional Review Board (IRB).

  • 2018 Update - Jacksonville Area Legal Aid: Residential Foreclosures and Gender Discrepancies

    The purpose of this report is to assess the differences in the presence or absence of males and females on mortgages and promissory notes in Duval County, Florida. Results presented below indicate that men and women appear on mortgages at nearly identical rates. However, when both genders appear on the mortgage, men are more likely to appear on a promissory note than women.

    The data collected in this report from the Public Opinion Research Laboratory (PORL) at the University of North Florida reflects foreclosure cases filed in Duval County from August 29 th , 2014 through August 31 st , 2018. The PORL was contracted by Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) to collect and analyze foreclosure data in Duval County in the summer of 2014.. The PORL was once again contracted by JALA to update the existing data in the summer of 2018; those results are displayed in this report.

  • December 21, 2018 - Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Community Survey

    This report was prepared for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) following the administration of the JSO Community Survey. This report serves to gauge community perceptions of public safety in Jacksonville, Florida (not including the Beaches Communities). The PORL administered a telephone survey from November 30, 2018 through December 13, 2018. To ensure a representative sample was being collected, the county was stratified using the six JSO patrol zones, which are broken down into sectors and sub-sectors so that officers can easily naviagate and find neighborhoods within the community. Quotas were placed on each of these stratified areas to ensure a proportionate amount of completed surveys from across the zones.

  • September 24, 2018 - Jacksonville Aviation Authority Airport Service Quality Survey

     The Public Opinion Research Laboratory (PORL) at the University of North Florida conducted the following analysis on behalf of the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA). The dataset being analyzed is the Airport Service Quality Survey (ASQ), conducted by DKMA for Airports Council International (ACI). According to ACI, the ASQ “is a comprehensive ACI initiative to help airports in their continuing efforts to improve the quality of service experienced by passengers.” The following analysis includes data from 109 airports worldwide from 2017 through the first two quarters of 2018.

  • August 24, 2017- Duval County HUD Housing and Code Enforcement Assessment

    PORL conducted an analysis of the City of Jacksonville's Municipal Code Compliance Division (MCCD) current policy that prevents the MCCD from inspecting and enforcing violations in HUD properties.

    Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) sponsored this poll to gauge community perceptions of public safety in Jacksonville, Florida (not including the Beaches Communities). This survey was conducted from November 14 through December 12, 2016 through live telephone interviews with adult respondents in Jacksonville, Florida. This survey resulted in 1,711 interviews across the six JSO patrol zones. The margin of sampling error for the total sample is +/- 2.37 percentage points.

    FDOT contracted with the PORL at UNF to gather information about the attitudes and awareness of adults living in 10 counties that experience some of the most serious injuries and fatal motorcycle crashes in the State of Florida. Motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists were asked about FDOT's motorcycle safety awareness campaigns and their general driving habits. The performance goal is to monitor the progress of FDOT's motorcycle safety awareness campaigns and their coverage throughout these counties.

    Each JSO police patrol zone was weighted by age, gender and race to the estimated 2015 American Community Survey (ACS). This analysis produced sample data for demographic characteristics of people who are 18 years of age or older and live in Jacksonville, Florida (excluding the Beaches Communities).

  • July 6, 2016 - Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit

    The Florida Fourth Judicial Circuit Poll was conducted Monday, June 27 through Thursday, June 30, 2016 by telephone. Samples were created through voter files provided by each county's board of elections and selected through the use of randomization among likely voters. Calls were conducted only in English, with 747 registered likely voters 18 years of age or older. Likely voters were considered people who had voted in either four out of the last five statewide elections (presidential preference primary in 2016, statewide primary elections in 2012 and 2014 and general elections in 2012 and 2014). Voters who voted in at least the 2014 statewide primary election and were newly registered voters that voted in the 2016 presidential preference primary were also included as likely voters. In addition to be considered a likely voter, respondent indicated that they would "Definitely Vote" or "Probably Vote" in August's primary election.

  • September 15, 2015 - Florida Department of Transportation "Click It or Ticket" Survey

    Description: A telephone survey was conducted, both a pre-wave and post-wave survey, for the "Click It or Ticket" safety campaign, which took place during Memorial Day Weekend.

    Polling Universe: People 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license and spend more than 1-month in Florida.

    Weights: The general population or total sample was weighted by age, gender, and race to the estimated

    2013 American Community Survey (ACS), from the U.S. Census Bureau. There was an oversample of both young drivers (18-34 years old) weighted to the 2013 ACS and the pickup truck drivers were weighted to the initial total sample percentages.
