Photography and Videography Best Practices

The our team is made up of skilled photographers and videographers who bring our brand strategy to life. Through compelling visuals, they tell our story across social media, our website, and both print and digital marketing platforms.

PHOTOGRAPHY

In addition to a staff photographer employed through Marketing and Communications, there are also additional photographers who have photography service agreements with UNF. Check the Procurement website for more information about photography vendors.

UNF strongly recommends that departments obtain written approval from people in photographs before using their image in web or printed publications. A photography release form should be signed by each person that is recognizable in the photo. Departments are responsible for keeping their forms on file. They are also responsible for any liability resulting from noncompliance.

Photography Best Practices

  • At events incorporate the brand whenever possible
  • Try to capture people in UNF clothing and/or colors
  • DO NOT take photos of individuals wearing other institution’s logos!
  • Every aspect of the photo should be pleasing

  • Surroundings should be free of clutter
  • Look for engaging content
  • Try shooting close to the subjects

Additional Resources

  • Utilize a smart phone camera. Standard smart phone cameras are often capable of capturing photos with a resolution high enough to meet social media needs as well as other platforms.
  • Use the available list of contract photographers to find resources. Refer to University procedures for utilizing contractors. When using a contract photographer, the contract and all associated fees are the sole responsibility of the requesting department.
  • The Center for Instruction and Research Technology (CIRT) is available to support faculty for headshots and additional resources.
  • UNF Student Union (Building 58 East) now offers a headshot booth. Please contact the UNF Student Union at 904-620-2525 for information.

VIDEOGRAPHY

The Videography team in UNF’s Marketing and Communications division brings the university’s story to life through powerful visual storytelling. We produce high-quality video content that reflects the spirit of the Osprey community—engaging viewers, sharing knowledge, and inspiring pride in everything that makes the University of North Florida unique.

Videography Best Practices

Plan Out Your Video Prior to Shooting.

Create a storyboard if necessary and be clear on what the video will be used for and what shots are needed.

Make it Visually Engaging.

When creating videos for an external audience, remember that the opening shot might be their very first impression of our campus. Use this opportunity to showcase the university’s unique character by featuring iconic locations. Whenever possible, include university-branded banners in your interviews or stand-up shots to reinforce our identity.

Know Your Audience.

A social media video for a student audience will need to be shot differently than one for university donors. For all audiences – keep it authentic.

Composition is Important.

Framing your video is important. Keep rule of thirds in mind and be sure to provide head room. Keep colors bright and vibrant.

How are You Sharing the Video?

The platform for distribution will determine how you will shoot the video. Horizontal or vertical or both? Also, length is an important factor when editing. Short videos are recommended and mandated by most social platforms.

Ensure Quality Audio.

Try to capture clean, clear audio. Use a book mic or lav mic when possible. Be aware of and avoid distracting background noise – this can include AC units and traffic! Level speaking volume to broadcast standard of -12 decibels and level volume of music to -18 so the mix is not interfering with the message.

Always Use Captions.

And always check automated captioning for correct translation and spelling.
