Undergraduate TESOL Minor Program

Program description

The academic minor in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) provides opportunities for undergraduate students to complete a sequence of courses that academically trains them for careers to teach English domestically and abroad. In these contexts, candidates will benefit from learning knowledge of language fundamentals paired with cultural and pedagogical TESOL training and teaching experiences.

Track 1: Academic training focus

  1. TSL3080: ESOL Foundations: Culture and Language (3 credits); offered every fall, spring, and summer as needed (online, hybrid, or face-to-face)
  2. TSL4340: TESOL Methods and Curriculum (3 credits); offered every fall and spring (hybrid or face-to-face) A 36-hour field experience is required as part of the course. *Pre-requisite: TSL3080
  3. TSL4240: Applied linguistics and Grammar in TESOL (3 credits); offered every fall, spring, and summer as needed (online) A 5-10 hour non-traditional classroom field experienced is required as part of the course.
  4. EDF2085: Introduction to Diversity for Educators (3 credits); offered every fall,spring, and summer (face-to-face)
  5. Choose one multicultural-/language-/diversity-related course (including a college-level foreign language course) in consultation with a TESOL program faculty advisor, TESOL@unf.edu, (3 credits)

Track 2: Field experience focus

  1. TSL4324: TESOL for Content Area Teachers (3 credits); offered every fall and spring (face-to-face) A 36-hour field experience is required as part of the course. 
  2. TSL4944: TESOL Practicum (3 credits); offered every spring.

  3. TSL4240: Applied Linguistics and Grammar in TESOL (3 credits); offered every fall and spring, possibly summer as needed (online). A 5-10 hour non-traditional classroom field experienced is required as part of the course.

  4. EDF2085: Introduction to Diversity for Educators, 3 credits, every fall & spring, and summer (face-to-face)
