Undergraduate Teaching English Abroad Certificate
Program Description
The Teaching English Abroad Certificate prepares candidates to become teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in U.S. settings as well as teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) in international settings.
This program is designed to align with domestic and international ESOL core concepts:
- Methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL);
- ESOL curriculum and materials development;
- Cross-cultural communication and understanding;
- Applied linguistics; and
- Testing and evaluation of ESOL.
Upon completion of the five courses listed below, students will obtain a certificate issued by the University of North Florida.
Required Courses
Track 1:
- TSL3080: ESOL Foundations: Culture and Language (3 credits) *5 hours field experience
- TSL4340: TESOL Methods, Curriculum, and Assessment (3 credits) *36 hours field experience
- TSL4240: Applied linguistics and Grammar in TESOL (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience
- TSL4520: ESOL Cross-Cultural Communication (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience (Summer only)
Or
- TSL4441: Assessment in ESOL Settings (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience (Summer only)
- TSL4944: TESOL Practicum (3 credits) (Fall 2021 & Spring 2022)
Track 2:
- TSL4324: ESOL Issues and Strategies in Content Instruction (3 credits) *36 hours field experience
- TSL4240: Applied linguistics and Grammar in TESOL (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience
- TSL4520: ESOL Cross-Cultural Communication (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience (Summer only)
- TSL4441: Assessment in ESOL Settings (3 credits) *5-10 hours field experience (Summer only)
- TSL4944: TESOL Practicum (3 credits) (Fall 2021 & Spring 2022)

- This certificate is for all majors who are interested in teaching English abroad.
- This certificate is not directly linked with the Florida Department of Education ESOL endorsement or K-12 ESOL teaching certification/license.
- This certificate is different from the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate offered by UNF's English Language Program. The TEFL Certificate is a non-credit certificate program designed for those who wish to teach English abroad. It is an intensive four-week program with 55 instructional hours, 55 post-instructional observation hours, and 10 hours of practicum.
