Jacksonville Teacher Residency (JTR)

You always thought you'd be a great teacher... here's your chance! The Jacksonville Teacher Residency (JTR), an Osprey Teaching Corps pipeline, prepares graduates for certification in elementary and special education, middle grades mathematics and science, secondary language arts, social studies, science, and math to teach in high-need Duval County Public Schools.

Residents apprentice for a full year with an expert teacher while enrolled in UNF's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Students can now choose from three concentrations in the MAT: MAT in Elementary Education, MAT in Secondary Education, or MAT in Exceptional Student Education.

JTR FAQs

Residents will...

  • Begin course work at UNF in mid-May 2023 and continue through June or July 2024
  • Start residency year assignment in Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) in August of 2023
  • Partner with a mentor in a high-needs school in Duval County
  • Intern in a classroom four days (or an equivalency) per week
  • Attend UNF graduate courses one day (or an equivalency) per week
  • Commit to teach in a high-needs DCPS school for three years
  • Complete the Florida Teacher Certification Exams (FTCE) for licensure

JTR Program Highlights

  • A selective residency program for prospective teacher leaders to teach in high-need schools.
  • A residency model that blends a full-year classroom apprenticeship experience with Master's level course work in education, leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching.
  • Additional focus on recruiting individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM areas.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate/Graduate degree in an applicable field
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study
  • GRE or Florida General Knowledge Exam (GK Exams) are no longer a requirement. Florida Teacher Subject Area Examination (SAE) (based on intended certification area) for Secondary 6-12 and Middle Grades Math/Science 5-9, is the only test required for admission to the UNF Graduate School
  • A passion and desire to make a difference through teaching

  • Food and Childcare Assistance (pending eligibility)
  • Education Award ($6,895) to use towards repaying federal student loans or access for further education (awarded July 2024)
