Local Business and Non-Profit Outreach

While the University works to provide a knowledgeable and professional workforce to the Jacksonville business and non-profit community, it also provides many resources through the work of the faculty and staff. Together with area corporate, civic, and government leaders, UNF is committed to enhancing the economy and quality of life in Jacksonville.

Resources

The University has always relied on the support of the business community in Jacksonville. However, it also strives to meet the needs and provide resources to the businesses and organizations in the area. These resources include:

Coggin College of Business Annual Family & Closely Held Business Forum
This annual forum explores critical transitional issues for today's family and closely held businesses.

The Institute for Management, Development, & Organizational Quality
This institute provides technical expertise in the functional areas of business to organizations whose operations affect Northeast Florida.

The Small Business Development Center | Website
This center assists potential and existing business owners by providing the management advice, training and information they need to start, grow, and profit. It serves 18 counties from offices in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Ocala.

UNF SIFE and Interline Brands Tools for the Trade Program
This program educates area plumbing, electrical, and HVAC contractors on becoming successful entrepreneurs.

Supplier Diversity

Future phases of the project will uncover the extent to which the University of North Florida impacts the Jacksonville economy by using minority contractors and suppliers.

Continuing Education and Training Programs

UNF assists individuals and employers in learning and sharpening pertinent job skills. For instance, the Continuing Education program offers the annual Administrative Professionals Conference and Expo and the annual African-American Professionals Conference, which are both well attended by area business people. Continuing Education and the Coggin College of Business also partner to provide the Executive Leadership Program for area business leaders.

The Coggin College of Business Career Management Center develops relationships with local and regional corporations looking to hire business graduates, and provides them with the services to recruit UNF students. The UNF Career Center also provides these services to both local and national companies. More information from them will be uncovered in future phases of the project.

Continuing Education has forged some unique partnerships that assist in providing a solid workforce for the Jacksonville business community.

Corporate and Non-Profit Partnerships

While the University is associated with a number of corporations, three substantial corporate partnerships were identified. This includes the Music department partnership with Buffet Crampton USA, the CIS Program partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, and a Continuing Education/Coggin College of Business partnership with Russian Logistics Companies.11 The CIS Program partnership is a three-year $240,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) that puts students in the Computer Information and Sciences program to work on computing applications of interest to BCBS. Since the partnership, students have spent over 10,000 hours of research, development, and deployment of computer health related applications. Upon graduation, so far six CIS students have gone to work for BCBS and 24 have used the experience to find IT jobs in the Jacksonville area.

In addition to corporate partnerships, University faculty also develop partnerships with non-profit organizations for a variety of activities. Like other types of partnerships, there are advantages to all of those involved. For example, many partnerships formed with non-profit organizations are for research purposes. Research provides learning opportunities for faculty and students and, many times, non-profits gain valuable information used to improve or focus their mission. Other partnerships simply allow students to provide a service to the non-profit, practicing the skills they have learned in the classroom.

Center for Community Initiatives (CCI) and Healthy Start of Northeast Florida

CCI provides a comprehensive evaluation each year, which includes ongoing work at the clinic involving conducting interviews, focus groups, and surveys with key stakeholders, coordinating data collection by project staff, performing data analysis, and preparing progress reports for the funding agency and community partners.

Center for Criminal Justice Policy Research and Operation New Hope

The Center worked to enhance Operation New Hope’s data management program, Ready4Work. Ready4Work Jacksonville is an offender re-entry workforce development program which mobilizes local coalitions to work together for sustainable offender reintegration, and to improve outcomes to offenders and the communities in which they live.

Florida Institute for Education and the Don Brewer Early Learning and Professional Development Center

FIE and the Don Brewer Center implements a collaborative research agenda focused on improving the readiness outcomes of children birth to five living in low-income neighborhoods. Recent projects include field-testing a curriculum intervention focusing on obesity, field-testing a hands-on science intervention focusing on improving children’s conceptual development.

Student Internships

In 2007 there were approximately 60 different courses offering internships at various Jacksonville area businesses and organizations. During that same time period, approximately 730 students completed an internship program. For example, the College of Computing Sciences and Engineering had 125 students working for about 45 Jacksonville area companies, including ADTEC, Bank of America, CSX, RS&H Engineering, and Mayo Clinic in the spring of 2006.

The organizations that faculty and staff work with are as varied as the individuals. They include the First Coast Manufacturing Association, Landstar Trucking, Florida Family Resource Coalition, the Military Officers’ Association of America, Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Cummer Art Gallery, and the Work Development Commission. According to the faculty survey, faculty spent approximately 1,769 hours in 2007 serving on non-profit or business boards.
