Certified Financial Planner™ Certificate Program

The demand for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals is expected to grow by 32% in the next decade.* Our 273-hour certificate program has been established to meet the need of professionals who are able to plan, assess and evaluate a client’s financial future through the development of a comprehensive financial plan. This program is registered with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. Successful completion of our program meets the education requirement, making you eligible to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.

Schedule

The University of North Florida Division of Continuing Education is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) to provide the certified financial planning program. This is the recommended certification for financial planners, insurance agents, bankers, accountants, retirement specialists and anyone in the finance industry.

  • Module 1

    General Principles

    Designed to introduce students to the financial planning process. The course focuses on the general principles required to become a successful financial planner which include the ethics of the profession as well as the knowledge and skills required to prepare a financial plan.

  • Module 2

    Insurance

    Designed to acquaint students with the principles of risk management and various types of insurance including casualty, fire, health, life, auto, home, disability. The principles taught prepare students to identify a client’s risk exposure and select appropriate risk management techniques.

    Investment

    Introduces the wide variety of investment vehicles that may be included in a client’s portfolio. Topics include client assessment, tax considerations, economic factors, valuation methods, asset allocation techniques, portfolio performance evaluation, and more.

  • Module 4

    Income Tax

    Emphasizes the fundamentals of individual income taxation, the tax implications of various types of businesses, tax-advantaged investments, employee compensation issues and planning, alternative minimum tax, tax traps, and more.

  • Module 5

    Retirement

    Provides a complete overview of retirement planning including retirement savings need analysis, qualified retirement plan design, Social Security, Medicare, and more. In addition, group life, health, and disability insurance; non-qualified deferred compensation; and other commonly provided employee benefits are examined.

  • Module 6

    Estate

    Covers planning and managing federal estate and gift tax planning & opportunities. The perspectives of heirs, fiduciaries, estates, trusts, beneficiaries, donors, and donees are considered. Topics include asset valuation, estate tax deductions, exemptions & credits. Significant time is given to the transfer of amount at death and the dispositive tools available to clients.

    Capstone

    The Financial Plan Development Capstone course will integrate the material from program individual courses. Students will take this course only when they have finished all previous program courses successfully or meet CFP Board criteria for challenge status. This course will be structured as a casework course with cases that will closely reflect the types of cases students may encounter as financial planner. Each student case will integrate discussed components to reflect the complexities of working with real life clients in both written and oral format.

Ashish Bajaj Headshot

Ashish Bajaj, CFP® CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Ashish has been a financial planner since 2013. He earned his CFP® designation in 2016 after completing the Zahn Partnered Program at the University of North Florida.Prior to becoming a financial planner, Ashish was a management consultant and medical association executive. He held several positions at the American Medical Association, including Director of International Medical Graduate and Senior Physician Services, where he was responsible for leading two of the AMA’s largest physician groups. He also spent several years working as a strategy consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, specializing in organizational design, change management and strategic communications.Ashish received his Bachelors in Biology from the University of Chicago and his MBA from Emory University. He has been active in a number of charitable and civic organizations in Jacksonville including the League of Women Voters, the Jacksonville Dance Theatre, the Performers Academy, and JCCI. In his spare time, Ashish enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.Ashish is an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Florida and a member of FPA of Northeast Florida.

Meet Ashish Bajaj

 

David Hudson HeadshotDavid Hudson, CFP® CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™  

David is a financial planner in Jacksonville Beach and part of a larger practice group with offices in Florida and Georgia. His primary work involves the assembly, implementation, and ongoing management of financial plans for professionals and small business owner clients across the county. David brings to his personal practice over 27 years of diverse financial services experience including time in retail banking, insurance, and investment advising. He completed the Zahn review course in July 2015 and earned his CFP® designation in August of that year. In addition to earning the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner certification, he has also held the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor® designation since 2012, is FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities registered, and holds Life and Annuity insurance licenses in multiple states. As the son of two military parents, David traveled the U.S. extensively while growing up and still loves to explore in his free time. He also developed a love of hockey living in Alaska and Michigan as a child, and while attending college in upstate New York. He can be found most weekends playing in local adult hockey leagues and spending time with his family.
