Collaborate With UNF

Partnering with businesses and organizations to address R&D challenges is an important part of UNF's mission. Our faculty, staff, and students are well positioned to help you solve issues facing your company or take advantage of emerging opportunities. As a public university, however, our assistance must be conducted under a contract, and we are obligated to charge for services we provide. Fortunately, UNF's Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is here to make it easy for you, and we have a number of contract templates for non-disclosure, research services, and master agreements.

One area of legitimate concern for many of our partners is the availability of novel intellectual property, especially patentable inventions, produced during collaborative R&D projects with UNF. To address this, we have established industry-friendly options for securing the rights to commercialize any technologies that come out of R&D collaborations:

UNF Easy Exclusive

  • Partner pays full direct and indirect costs of R&D project.
  • Pre-pays additional 10% of total project costs for exclusive worldwide license to any novel inventions that result from the R&D.
  • No annual minimums; no time limits; no milestones on commercialization.
  • Partner guides patenting activities and pays all costs.
  • Partner agrees to pay royalty rate of 1% on net product sales.
  • Partner is free to sublicense/cross-license.

UNF Easy Non-Exclusive

  • Partner pays full direct and indirect costs of R&D project.
  • Pre-pays additional 10% of total project costs for non-exclusive worldwide license to any novel inventions that result from the R&D.
  • No annual minimums; no time limits; no milestones on commercialization.
  • Partner guides patenting activities and pays all costs.
  • No royalty payments, but may not be sublicensed/cross-licensed.
  • Option to negotiate an exclusive royalty-bearing license within six months of end of R&D project.

Traditional Approach

  • Partner pays full direct and indirect costs of R&D project.
  • UNF and business partner negotiate a license for novel inventions within six months after the project is complete.
