Signature Events

The UNF Victim Advocacy Program (VAP) takes a three-pronged approach to supporting the university community: direct services, education, and programming. As part of its programming efforts, VAP collaborates with off-campus resources, departments, and student organizations across campus to promote education and awareness within the UNF community. Each year, the UNF Victim Advocacy Program hosts and highlights the following three signature events that help foster a campus of education, safety, and awareness.

Red Zone

The “Red Zone” is the time period between the beginning of the Fall semester and Thanksgiving Break when sexual assaults are at their highest on college campuses. The term “Red Zone” was coined by journalist Robin Warshaw in 1988 in her book I Never Called It Rape and later, Dr. David Lisak, a clinical psychologist, who popularized and expanded the concept in the 1990s and 2000s. Each year, the UNF Victim Advocacy hosts a variety of Red Zone events to bring awareness to sexual assault, promote prevention, and provide students with resources and information to help them stay safe. Red Zone is a collaborative, campus-wide effort that brings together different departments across campus to create a safer and more informed UNF community.

Take Back The Night

UNF Victim Advocacy Program hosts Take Back the Night each year during Domestic and Dating Violence Awareness Month in October. As the oldest worldwide movement dedicated to standing against all forms of dating violence, Take Back the Night brings our campus community together to raise awareness, support survivors, and take a stand for a safer campus community.

Join us the Victim Advocacy Program this year Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 4:30–8:30 PM for an evening featuring a resource fair, campus march, performers, and survivor speakers.

To close the event, there will be a candlelight vigil honoring those who have shared their story and for all who stand in solidarity to end all forms of dating and domestic violence.

UNF Teal Out

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a nationwide movement dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault, supporting survivors, and promoting prevention. SAAM was first observed in 2001 through the work of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) and the Resource Sharing Project (RSP). Their mission was simple: to break the silence surrounding sexual assault, support survivors, and create meaningful change in the fight for justice and prevention.

Here at UNF, the Victim Advocacy Program hosts “UNF TEAL OUT” every year throughout the month of April. Teal was chosen by these organizations as the preferred color to represent sexual assault awareness and prevention, making it a meaningful symbol throughout the month. Each week, there are events across campus to spread awareness, share ways to help prevent sexual assault, connect students with important resources, and create a supportive environment for survivors and the entire UNF community.
