Microsoft Copilot is Soaring at UNF

Expanded Access to Copilot Generative AI for All Ospreys

UNF is excited to introduce Copilot with Data Protection, an enterprise-level AI tool from Microsoft for all UNF students, faculty, and staff. In April 2024, UNF expanded access to Copilot with Data Protection, Microsoft’s enterprise generative AI tool. Now all students, faculty and staff at UNF can use the institutionally scoped chatbot and productivity assistant. Copilot currently generates text with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model and creates images using DALL-E 3.

The expanded access to Copilot means that the entire Osprey community, students, faculty and staff, can use an institutionally sponsored and supported generative AI tool.

“The launch of Copilot at UNF will support Student Success by providing an exciting tool to help advance our teaching and research capabilities,” stated Dr. Karen Patterson, Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. “Copilot offers an additional way to increase inquiry and innovation throughout the University.”

Before you begin using Copilot, sign in with your UNF account. You'll log in using your UNF account, just like when logging into MyWings or other online Microsoft 365 products. Once logged into Copilot with Data Protection, you'll notice a "protected" badge next to your user profile picture. Currently, Microsoft Copilot supports Microsoft Edge (desktop and mobile app) and Chrome (desktop). Microsoft Edge is the recommended browser.

Copilot is the FIRST approved Generative AI platform for use with UNF Data

As we navigate the transformative landscape of generative AI, it's imperative for organizations and individuals alike to prioritize data security and uphold the highest standards of data ethics. By doing so, we not only protect individual privacy and security but also contribute to the sustainable and ethical advancement of AI technologies. Encourage yourself to be part of this movement by practicing responsible data security and advocating for it within your sphere of influence.

“The introduction of Copilot with enhanced data protection at UNF marks a transformative leap forward in how we engage with technology," stated Brian Verkamp, Vice President for IT and Chief Information Officer. "We are thrilled to provide our campus with a unified tool that not only fosters innovation but also ensures UNF’s data integrity and security.” All Ospreys can access Copilot by visiting copilot.microsoft.com.

Use Copilot Responsibly

At UNF, Copilot with Data Protection has additional data safeguards that other generative AI tools may not have. You still have a responsibility to exercise due care over any data you submit to a third party. Protect the University’s and your own information.

About Microsoft Copilot

Copilot with Data Protection serves as a more secure option compared to consumer-focused generative AI services such as OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard, or the standard edition of Copilot, previously known as Bing Chat. Copilot currently employs OpenAI’s GPT-4 model for generating text and utilizes DALL-E 3 for image creation.

One of the main advantages of using Copilot with Data Protection is how it keeps your information safe and secure. When you're using the enterprise version of Copilot, Copilot with Data Protection, Microsoft ensures that your conversations remain private—they won't store or look at them. Plus, your queries are encrypted for added protection. Finally, Microsoft doesn't use any data or queries from Copilot with Data Protection to train its AI models. By utilizing Copilot with Data Protection you get the same functionality as OpenAI ChatGPT, or Google Bard without risking the security of UNF data.
