Prompting is the foundational skill for working effectively with generative AI. Just as search engines revolutionized information access, prompting is now the gateway to productive, ethical, and creative engagement with AI. Whether you're a faculty member designing assignments or a student looking to enhance your learning, understanding how to frame your prompts makes all the difference.
Why Prompting MattersPrompting is more than just typing a question into a chatbot; it’s a form of digital literacy. Well-crafted prompts can lead to accurate summaries, creative teaching materials, engaging assignments, and even personalized study guides. Poorly written prompts, on the other hand, can lead to generic or misleading content.
Core Prompting Strategies- Be Specific: Clearly define what you want the AI to do. Vague instructions often yield vague results.
Example: “Summarize this 500-word article into three key bullet points that highlight the main findings.” - Give Context: Tell the AI who it should “pretend” to be and who the audience is.
Example: “You are a writing tutor helping a college freshman. Explain how to improve the clarity of this paragraph.” - Clarify Format: Indicate if you want a bulleted list, paragraph, table, or visual suggestion.
Example: “Create a table comparing qualitative and quantitative research methods in education.” - Break It Down: Complex tasks are more manageable when chunked into smaller parts.
Example: “Step 1: Brainstorm three thesis statements for an essay on climate policy. Step 2: Explain how each could be supported with evidence.” - Use Examples or Templates: Sharing a model response can help guide the AI's tone or structure.
Example: “Write a professional email like this one but for a student requesting an extension.” - Iterate: Good prompting is a recursive process. Don’t settle for the first answer; revise your prompt or ask follow-up questions to improve output.
Prompting isn't just for getting answers; it's an opportunity to develop critical thinking, digital literacy, and ethical awareness. Asking students to reflect on how they used AI, what they prompted, and how they evaluated the response can turn AI use into a meaningful metacognitive experience.
