Accessibility Basics
Learn the fundamentals of digital accessibility and how to apply them to your courses.
In Spring 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a final rule under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act requiring all public universities to make their digital content fully compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. For UNF, the compliance deadline is April 24, 2026.
This regulation applies to university websites, mobile apps, and third-party platforms like Canvas. Faculty are responsible for making sure the materials they create and share with students are accessible, including:
- Syllabi, lecture slides, PDFs, and readings
- Online quizzes, exams, and assignments
- Digital textbooks and Canvas course content
- Faculty Domain pages, such as personal sites, lab sites, and symposiums
Accessibility doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A good starting point is removing outdated or unnecessary content from Canvas, moving older files to OneDrive for storage, and focusing on remediating the materials students use most often. CIRT offers training, tools, and individual support to help ensure that faculty can meet accessibility standards and give every student the chance to fully engage and succeed.
Quick Wins
- Add descriptive alternative text to images
- Use proper headings for structure
- Create meaningful links
- Check for color contrast & avoid color-only meaning
