UNF's AI Framework

UNF’s AI Framework ensures educators use artificial intelligence ethically, securely, and in alignment with our academic mission. Developed under the guidance of the UNF AI Council, these principles support faculty in integrating AI thoughtfully into teaching, research, and operations.

  • 1. Understand: Know the Tool
    • Recognize AI’s strengths, limitations, and risks.
    • Match AI tools with clear learning objectives—use traditional AI for automating tasks and generative AI for fostering creativity or personalized feedback.
  • 2. Be Accountable & Transparent
    • Clearly disclose AI usage in syllabi, assignments, and communications.
    • Cite AI-generated content—students and faculty alike should know when and how AI contributed to work products.
  • 3. Uphold Integrity
    • Use AI in ways that respect intellectual property, academic honesty, and university standards.
    • Avoid unauthorized or deceptive AI use and ensure AI inputs do not violate data privacy policies.
  • 4. Strive for Excellence & Equity
    • Use AI to raise the academic rigor and impact of your work.
    • Take advantage of AI-enhanced tools responsibly to support diverse learners through accessibility features and inclusive design.
  • 5. Promote a Culture of Care
    • Develop AI tools and assignments that remain centered on human interaction, empathy, and connection.
    • Use AI to support, not replace, faculty-student engagement, and ensure that every learner feels valued and supported.
  • 6. Align with Policy
    • Follow UNF’s Academic Integrity Policy and other regulations (e.g., FERPA, accessibility, ethics) when applying AI in your teaching.
    • Ensure that AI-driven grading or analytics processes are fair, auditable, and meet transparency standards, particularly when AI outputs could affect academic progress.
  • 7. Use Approved Tools & Platforms
    • Use only AI platforms vetted and supported by UNF (e.g., Microsoft Copilot with data privacy).
    • Seek guidance from CIRT or the Help Desk when evaluating new tools, and confirm compliance with university policies.
  • 8. Support Ongoing Learning
    • Engage with training and innovation grants offered by the UNF AI Council.
    • Join communities of practice to explore emerging AI tools, pedagogy, and policy. AI literacy is an evolving journey, and UNF provides the support to grow.

Putting the Frameworks into Practice

Understand Begin the semester with a discussion on AI tools and their classroom roles.
Be Transparent Add a statement like "AI-assisted writing" to your syllabus policy.
Uphold Integrity Ask students to self-report AI use and submit annotated drafts.
Strive for Equity Use AI captioning tools to make videos accessible for all students.
Promote Care Design AI-supported peer-review exercises to maintain human interaction.
Align with Policy Use UNF-approved only for high-stakes grading assignments.
Use Approved Tools Direct students to Microsoft Copilot for secured AI tool use.
Support Learning Attend an AI workshop and apply strategies in your next course update.
