MedNexus | UNF Sculpture Program Partnership

Fostering Innovation Through Art & Healing

Transforming Spaces. Elevating Minds.

UNF MedNexus is proud to partner with the University of North Florida’s Sculpture Program to launch a unique opportunity for student artists to showcase their creativity through commissioned public art.

Through this collaboration, sculpture students will compete for the chance to design and install original, large-scale artwork in the MedNexus atrium at Deerwood—an inspiring, healthcare simulation and learning space. This initiative merges artistic innovation with healthcare, giving students a professional platform to engage the community through visual storytelling and immersive art.

A Canvas for Healing: The MedNexus Atrium

MedNexus, UNF’s premier hub for workforce innovation and education, provides a high-visibility, high-impact space for student artwork. The atrium, a central hub for collaboration among future healthcare professionals, researchers, and students, will be transformed into a living gallery where art and healthcare education intersect.

Selected pieces will reflect themes of:

  • Healing and wellness
  • Community and connection
  • Innovation and transformation
  • Nature and serenity

About the UNF Sculpture Program

The UNF Sculpture Program a dynamic, hands-on experience in contemporary three-dimensional artmaking. With an emphasis on craftsmanship, experimentation, and conceptual growth, students are encouraged to explore a variety of sculptural forms using both traditional techniques and cutting-edge technology.

State-of-the-Art Facilities Include:

  • Metal Fabrication: Welding, forging, plasma cutting
  • Woodworking: Full woodshop + CNC routing
  • Casting & Mold-Making: Bronze, aluminum, and iron foundry
  • Digital Fabrication: 3D scanning, printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling
  • Mixed Media: Innovative uses of alternative materials and processes

Students also have access to the UNF Fab Lab/Maker Space, enabling integration of digital manufacturing and advanced design tools into their sculptural practice.

Real-World Experience Through Public Art

UNF Sculpture students are no strangers to public art. The program actively supports professional development and community engagement through:

  • UNF Seaside Sculpture Park installations
  • Local and regional public art commissions
  • Internships with leading institutions like MOCA Jacksonville and the Cummer Museum

This MedNexus collaboration provides another extraordinary opportunity for students to build their portfolios, gain professional exposure, and see their work make a tangible impact in a real-world healthcare setting.

A Competition That Inspires

Students will be invited to submit original sculpture proposals tailored to the MedNexus space. A review committee will select top finalists, who will receive guidance, fabrication support, and a commission to bring their visions to life. Winning pieces will be installed in the atrium, becoming a permanent symbol of the healing power of art and innovation.

Bringing Art to Life – In the Heart of Healthcare

This partnership exemplifies UNF’s mission to unite creativity, education, and community enrichment. Through this collaboration, students don’t just create art—they create meaning, inspiration, and lasting experiences for all who enter the MedNexus space.
