You can reach out at any time, but consider contacting us if you're facing academic difficulties, exploring majors, dealing with university issues, or simply seeking personalized support.
  • Can I refer myself to Success Advocacy?
Absolutely! While faculty, advisors, and staff can refer students, you are encouraged to reach out directly if you feel you could benefit from additional support.
  • What happens during a Success Advocacy appointment?
During the appointment, you and your advocate will discuss your challenges, goals, and create a personalized action plan to address your specific needs.
  • Is my information confidential?

In most cases, yes, your information is confidential. We understand the importance of keeping your personal matters private, and we have strict policies in place to protect your confidentiality. Any information you share with us will be treated with the utmost respect and discretion.

However, there are a few rare circumstances where confidentiality may need to be limited:

      • Mandatory Reporting: Due to UNF policies, we are required to report certain situations, such as immediate threats of harm to yourself or others, or active suicidal ideation. In these cases, we would carefully and ethically disclose the minimum necessary information to ensure safety and well-being.
      • Concern for Your Well-being: If we have serious concerns about your emotional or mental health, and believe you may benefit from additional support, we may recommend reaching out to resources like the Counseling Center or the Dean of Students Office. However, we would only discuss your specific situation with these departments after obtaining your consent or in emergency situations where confidentiality limitations apply.

In both of these situations, we would communicate openly and transparently with you about the reasons for limited confidentiality and ensure your student rights are protected throughout the process.

Overall, you can be confident that your information is safe with us, and we prioritize keeping your matters private. We encourage you to feel comfortable sharing openly and honestly, knowing that your trust is respected.

Additionally, you can always ask questions about specific situations where confidentiality may be limited. We are committed to providing clear and accurate information so you can make informed decisions about sharing your experiences.

  • How long does the Success Advocacy process take?
The duration varies based on individual needs ranging from 30 – 60 mins, although our goal is to provide ongoing support until you feel confident in your academic journey.
  • What is the difference between a Peer-Led Academic Coach and a Success Advocate?

Navigating the Support Landscape: Peer-Led Academic Coaches vs. Success Advocates

When navigating UNF, you might encounter two key support figures: Peer-Led Academic Coaches and Success Advocates. While both aim to help you thrive, the approaches and areas of focus differ significantly.

    Peer-Led Academic Coaches:

      • Academic Sharpeners: Think of them as laser-focused student study habit guides. Student led, they've excelled in academics and are equipped to share effective study strategies, and help you hone time management skills. They understand the challenges specific to certain courses and can offer invaluable study strategies, drawing on their own experiences to guide you.
      • Targeted Approach: While incredibly valuable for academic roadblocks, their expertise primarily lies within the academic realm and student study habits. They may not be equipped to address broader personal or complex academic challenges affecting your studies.

    Success Advocates:

      • Holistic Approach: Success Advocates go beyond the classroom walls. Success Advocates are trained professionals, often with backgrounds in education, counseling, or social work. If your challenges reach beyond study habits, Success Advocates can assist. Their gaze extends to the complex interplay between academics, personal well-being, and external factors. Success Advocates can delve deeper, understanding how stress, anxiety, relationships, or financial concerns might be impacting your academic performance.
      • Connecting the Dots: Success Advocates role involves unraveling the tangled web of challenges you might face and connecting you to relevant campus resources: SI, tutoring, mental health services, or One-Stop. Success Advocates become your navigators within the larger support system, ensuring you access the tools you need to succeed.

    Choosing the Right Resource:

The ideal support resource depends on your specific needs. If you're struggling with studying for a particular course or simply want to optimize your study habits, an Academic Coach can be a vital resource. If you're experiencing broader challenges impacting your overall academic performance, a Success Advocate can provide the holistic support and guidance you need to navigate and overcome them.

Remember, both options are valuable, and you're not limited to just one. Unsure about the best resource to take advantage of for your challenges? Talk to a Success Advocate. The Success Advocate can help identify the most fitting resource and facilitate your first steps toward a successful collaboration. Don't hesitate to utilize both resources as needed to build your own personalized support network for a successful and fulfilling UNF experience.
