UNF students expand global perspectives through education and culture in the UK

Led by Dr. Christian Winterbottom, associate professor of early childhood education, the University of North Florida’s 2025 study abroad trip to the United Kingdom offered students a unique opportunity to explore British education, culture and urban life through an immersive, interdisciplinary experience.

The program combined academic inquiry with cultural exploration, giving students the chance to visit UK schools, engage with local communities, and reflect on the social and historical contexts that shape life in the UK. Through classroom observations and discussions with educators, students explored how British and American education systems compare in areas such as curriculum design, religious integration and educational policy.

“Visiting UK classrooms helped me understand both the similarities and differences in how students are taught and supported,” one student shared. “It was eye-opening to see the role that religious education plays in public schools and how the national curriculum creates a shared educational experience across the country.”

The group also reflected on shared challenges across education systems, including overcrowded classrooms, limited resources and teacher retention, issues that transcend borders and highlight the complexity of educational reform.

Outside the classroom, students explored major cities including London, where they examined urban design, public transit and green spaces as part of a broader conversation about social organization and quality of life. Many remarked on London’s blend of historical continuity and modern infrastructure, describing the city as a “living museum” with a deep sense of place.

Throughout the program, the concept of global citizenship remained a central theme. Students were encouraged to engage critically with questions of equity, access, public policy and cultural values. Guided by Dr. Winterbottom, they examined their own assumptions and built cross-cultural empathy through thoughtful dialogue and shared experience.

“This trip challenged me to think differently about education and community,” said one participant. “It helped me grow both personally and professionally and it reminded me that good leadership starts with understanding people in their context.”

The 2025 UK study abroad program exemplified UNF’s mission to prepare students for leadership in a global society. Through academic rigor, cultural immersion and meaningful reflection, the experience offered lasting insights and inspiration for future educators and advocates.
