Keynote: The Business Case for AI Ethics

Dr. Evan Selinger headshot

Speaker: Dr. Evan Selinger

Business leaders often find AI ethics frustrating, especially when it seems vague or burdensome. In many companies, ethics are reduced to a mere compliance exercise. Others take a more cynical approach, using virtue-signaling as part of their branding. And even when businesses want to do the right thing, they don’t always have the in-house knowledge to turn good intentions into meaningful action.

This talk takes those frustrations seriously. Drawing on years of experience teaching tech ethics to students preparing for real-world careers, consulting for companies, and advising the government, I’ll explain why these challenges persist and why they’re worth addressing. When approached thoughtfully, ethics is a strategic asset that can help companies reduce risk and build trust.

Dr. Selinger is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His research covers a range of issues in the philosophies of technology, especially privacy and ethics (including AI ethics). An advocate for widely sharing philosophical insights, Selinger is currently a contributing writer at The Boston Globe and has previously published in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Wired, Slate, The Nation, Salon, Bloomberg Opinion, and CNN. To enhance public policy, Selinger has partnered with legal and advocacy organizations like the ACLU, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, the Justice Collaborative, and Fight for the Future. For the past few years, Selinger has been a member of the Institute for Defense Analysis’s Ethical, Legal, and Social/Societal (ELSI) Working Group.
