Course Descriptions | How to Register | Search for Courses

The Hicks Honors College offers a wide range of courses in collaboration with departments all across UNF to give students access to high-impact curriculum that satisfies both their major and Honors course requirements. Courses offered in Hicks Honors specifically (starting with an IDH prefix), courses in General Education (listed with an (H)), and courses tagged as "Honors" by partnering departments can all count toward your required Honors classes. See below for descriptions, how to register, and how to search for specific options by department that are all tagged as "Honors."

Honors Course Descriptions

Honors students can meet their course requirements to graduate with Honors in several ways. Honors Innovation courses are special courses proposed to Honors by faculty in departments all over campus that deliver unique experiential learning opportunities. For incoming freshman, First Year Experience courses, like Honors Colloquium or ENC 1143, will play a large role in your introduction to UNF as a Hicks Honors student. Each semester, there are several General Education options exclusive to Honors students that provide a more high-touch approach to lower-level course reqs. At the upper-level, the Honors RISE curriculum includes Research, Internships, Study Abroad, and Experiential Learning (RISE) opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. For more information on Honors course options, view the drop-downs below for specific courses descriptions.

  • First Year Experience Courses

    Writing for FAN

    Dr. Dorsey Olbrich
    ENC1143 (H), CRN: 14514

Why should nurses read and study literature? What do we—and our patients—gain by learning to hear, process, and respond to stories? Narrative medicine, deemed “one of medicine’s most important internal renovations,” brings together literature and medicine to equip medical professionals with the tools they need to understand the narratives patients trust them with. In this process-based Honors writing course, students will discuss, read, research, and write about the burgeoning field of narrative medicine. Along the way, students will also learn the basics of APA-style writing and documentation as they compose a self-directed research paper on a topic in narrative medicine.

    A Taste of Jax

    ENC1143 (H), CRN: 14522

Explore Jacksonville’s neighborhoods through its ethnic food scene and immigrant history. Students will learn about Jacksonville through readings, research, in-class tastings, collaboration with international students, and a series of side quests: in-person explorations of different areas of the city. Bring your adventurous taste buds, let me know about any food allergies, and be prepared for some fun field trips.

    Place-Based Writing for Immersive Technologies

    ENC1143 (H), CRN 14516

This course asks students to spend time working with immersive technology and the outdoors. Using UNF’s nature trails and gardens, students will practice place-based writing for a 360-degree guided photo tour, incorporating both their experiences and research about the place. Students will explore different ways of knowing, listening, researching, and composing while working with multimedia. No immersive-media experience is needed; students will learn no-coding software and library resources.

    ENC1143 (H), CRN 12593, 13667

In this vampire-themed research and writing course, each of us will choose a vampire to research, writing the final synthesis paper on what deep-rooted anxieties or repressed desires they may represent, and why they are still revenant—erm, relevant!

    Writing About Film

    Dr. Jeff Smith
    ENC1143 (H), CRN 12592

Do you enjoy watching movies and talking about them? This course develops skills for writing about film for academic and public audiences. We’ll screen films from various genres, explore film terminology, form, and theory, discuss their social and cultural messages, and craft reviews and analytical writing for publication.

Chameleons, Changelings & Chimeras - Adaptive Writing in Context

    Dr. Rob Talbert
    ENC1143 (H), CRN In Process

This course will emphasize how writing changes across the disciplines, the myriad forms of evidence, and the overall contextual, that is, shapeshifting nature of communication. We will discuss changelings as topics from folklore, history, and pop culture, but also train ourselves to recognize how writing changes from one environment to the next.

    Scientific Writing

    Dr. Sara Steffen
    ENC1143 (H), CRN 14520

This section of ENC1143 is designed to reach a wide range of science majors and/or interests. "Scientific Writing" will help students better understand the principles of reading and writing in the sciences. Specifically, we will be building a foundation of scientific knowledge by reading studies from a variety of high impact journals in different fields to develop an appreciation for scientific writing and thought.

    Difficult Conversations

    Dr. Russ Turney
    ENC1143 (H), CRN 14531

We encounter difficult conversational situations every day, from family and social media to the public sphere. There is another option beyond uncivil conversation or silence: civil discourse. We will explore different paths to it through writing, discussion, community-based learning, and models ranging from student conduct scenarios to hostage scenarios.

    The Feed—Attention, Algorithms, and AI

    Dr. Sharon Wamble-King
    ENC1143 (H), CRN In Process

Students investigate how social media, algorithms, and AI influence what we notice, believe, buy, create, learn, ignore—and even whom we date. They examine the hidden systems behind the digital feed and the growing role of AI in commanding our attention and shaping our lives.

    What's Going On?

    Dr. Bart Welling
    ENC1143 (H), CRN 14435

In a world where so many people profit by throwing figurative gasoline on the flames, how can we know what is really going on? This course analyzes media representations of current events while developing the critical thinking and argumentation skills needed to evaluate claims, recognize manipulation and misinformation, and communicate persuasively about the issues shaping our world.

    Prof. Jade Marino
    ENC1143 (H), CRN 14532

Register for Honors Courses

When registering for courses each semester, there are a few ways that you can search to make sure you are registered for the correct course to earn Honors credit. First, you should speak with your academic advisor to see what courses will best align with your academic degree plan.

Search using the CRN

A Course Reference Number (CRN) is a five-digit code that identifies the exact course section that you would like to take. The easiest way to register for the correct Honors course would be to view the course offerings below, and copy the CRN number for a course you are interested in. When you go to the registration site in MyWings, select "Enter CRNs" to search and enroll.

Honors Attribute (Advanced Search)

On the registration site in MyWings, select "Advanced Search" to view additional search options. In the "Attribute" section, type "Honors" to search for courses with an attached Honors credit. All Honors courses have an Honors attribute (sometimes displayed as "HONR"), so this is a quick way to filter out your options on the registration site.

Honors Exclusive Courses "(H)"

Some courses include "(H)" in the section title (for example: "(H) Honors Research"). These are curated Honors courses that are exclusively available to students enrolled in the Hicks Honors College, such as Honors First Year or General Education courses. You can search for "(H)" in the course title to find available options each semester.
