Department of English

Study English at the University of North Florida

The most powerful thing you can do is learn to use language with precision and purpose. At UNF, the Department of English prepares students to do exactly that. Across creative writing, literature, film, digital humanities, professional writing and theater, you will develop your voice alongside faculty who are working writers, scholars and artists invested in where you are headed.

English graduates lead newsrooms, argue cases, build companies, write novels and shape policy. Your degree from UNF is not a backup plan. It is a launchpad.

Interdisciplinary Studies, B.A. & Film Minor

Passionate About Film? UNF Has a Path for That.

UNF does not offer a standalone film degree, but that does not mean film students are without a home. Whether you want film at the center of your degree or alongside another major, the English department has a structured pathway for you.

Interdisciplinary Studies (B.A.) — Curated Film Pathways

Film

A broad foundation in film as art, culture and communication. Explore cinema from critical, historical and theoretical perspectives across genres, movements and traditions.

Film & Production

Combine the study of film with hands-on production experience. Build the technical and creative skills to move from the audience to behind the camera.

Film & Screenwriting

Pair film analysis with the craft of writing for the screen. Develop your voice as a storyteller while deepening your understanding of how great films are built from the page up.

Already Have a Major?

The Film Minor is open to students from any discipline. Add a rigorous film education to your degree without changing your major. Because film is multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary, students from every field bring a unique perspective to its study.

The Value of English – Where Are They Now

Dr. David MacKinnon

Associate Instructor & Director, UNF Writing Center

“The experiences I had in the UNF English program and making friends in and out of the classroom had a profound effect on me.”

A three-time UNF English graduate, Dr. David MacKinnon arrived in Jacksonville as a self-described Army brat who had never lived anywhere longer than four or five years. The UNF English program changed that. Today he directs the UNF Writing Center, where he works daily to build the kind of welcoming, supportive environment that shaped his own path as a student. His journey from uncertain freshman to faculty leader is a testament to what an English degree from UNF can become.
