UNF Flight Deck Esports and Innovation Arena opens

Ozzie the Mascot standing in the UNF Flight DeckThe University of North Florida community on Friday celebrated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art UNF Flight Deck Esports & Innovation Arena in the John A. Delaney Student Union.

Announced in April 2025 and supported by a $3 million grant from the Jacksonville City Council, the space will serve as a hub of innovation and experiential learning for students seeking STEM-related careers. UNF will also host regional and national competitions, fostering a vibrant community where education, technology and esports converge.

The Flight Deck measures more than 2,800 square feet and accommodates up to 170 guests. It features 42 high-performance stations, each powered by latest-generation Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 graphics. Every station is equipped with high-refresh-rate monitors to ensure competitive-grade responsiveness, including a dedicated 10-seat competition stage for tournament play.

UNF students protect campus against cyberattacks

The UNF Security Operations Center staff standing togetherAfter getting to work early, grabbing a fresh cup of coffee and logging into the system, Alex Ramudo’s dashboard lights up with alerts.

More than 839 threats flagged for review. More than 10.7 million connection attempts blocked in just four hours.

What’s happening on his screen isn’t a simulation or classroom lab. It’s real-time cybersecurity defense.

Ramudo is a senior studying information technology at UNF, and he is part of the student-led Security Operations Center (SOC), part of UNF’s front line of defense against cyberattacks that is guided by UNF staff. The SOC employs students like Ramudo,  placing them in part-time roles as security analysts, where they monitor live data, investigate threats and respond to incidents using industry-standard tools from Microsoft, Fortinet and ServiceNow.

Athletic leadership explored at Silverfield Coaching Symposium

Student holding microphone while asking a questionThe University of North Florida’s Silverfield College of Education and Human Services recently hosted its inaugural Silverfield Coaching Symposium, focusing on the evolving landscape of high school coaching and athletic leadership.

The symposium brought together coaches, athletic directors and school leaders from across Northeast Florida for a day of professional development and collaboration. Conversations highlighted leadership development, student-athlete wellbeing, compliance, sports medicine and the critical connection between high school and collegiate athletics.

During the symposium, Silverfield announced it will soon launch a 12-credit-hour Coaching Education certificate through its sport management program.

JAX Hub hosts pitch competition at UNF

Participants of JAX Hub standing together for a photoJAX Hub hosted a pitch competition at the University of North Florida that will help bolster Northeast Florida’s global innovation future.

The UNF Coggin College of Business is the founding education partner of JAX Hub, a partnership with the City of Jacksonville; Paysafe, a leading global payments platform; and L Marks, a global corporation innovation leader, to drive innovation and collaboration. The partnership was announced last November.

At the heart of JAX Hub is the 10-week innovation project pairing entrepreneurs and innovators with UNF students and faculty, and corporate and community partners. This “innovation-lab-meets-Shark-Tank” model provides startups and students the chance to pilot new ideas, refine scalable business models and showcase final solutions to industry and academic leaders.

For this first cohort, focused on fintech, the L Marks team reviewed more than 600 companies from 16 countries. Fourteen exceptional startups were selected and invited to Jacksonville to pitch projects.

UNF and Petticoat-Schmitt developing AI-driven construction tech

Dr. Vamsi Kalasapudi pointing at a screen in front of a classThe University of North Florida and Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors are working together to develop AI‑powered tools that can help construction firms manage time‑consuming, inefficient or error‑prone tasks.

UNF’s College of Computing, Engineering and Construction (CCEC) launched the three-year academia-industry research partnership with Petticoat-Schmitt last year. Utilizing AI-driven business intelligence and operational automation will transform the construction industry.

UNF has created and is currently launching two apps as part of the collaboration that will improve processes, one by learning from past data to improve estimating and productivity, and the other by automatically reading project specifications to simplify submittal preparation.

Petticoat-Schmitt has a long history of strong engagement and collaboration with the University, hiring numerous UNF interns and alumni and regularly attending campus events.

Osprey Profile: Matt Ducusin

UNF graphic design student Matt DucusinWhen University of North Florida graphic design major Matt Ducusin entered the Adobe x UNF Esports Fan T‑Shirt Design Competition last fall, he didn’t expect his design to draw much attention — if any at all.

Created using Adobe Express, Ducusin’s design — depicting a flying osprey grasping an Xbox controller with its talons — was produced and submitted on the last day of eligibility.

To his surprise, he was announced as the winner in September, and his design has since been printed on more than 1,000 t-shirts.

Ducusin said he’s still taken aback when he sees someone wearing a shirt with his design.

UNF and DCPS offer specialized teacher training program

UNF student teaching math at a white board in front of studentsThe University of North Florida's Silverfield College of Education and Human Services and Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) are offering a specialized teacher training program, Project IDEAS. The primary goal of the project is to improve the academic and behavioral outcomes of students with disabilities. The project is in its final year of enrollment. Each year, the grant supports a cohort of 240 teachers.

The project focuses on building K-5 teacher capacity and improving outcomes for both students with and without disabilities in general education classrooms. It implements a professional learning model focused on High-Leverage Practices with ongoing coaching and mentoring for teachers.

Key results from the first year saw a reduction in challenging student behaviors, a significant increase in teacher motivation, and improvements in classroom climate.

Nursing students gain real-world insight through ALICE Simulation

UNF nursing students seated in a conference roomUNF nursing students recently stepped beyond the classroom to participate in United Way of Northeast Florida’s ALICE simulation, an immersive experience designed to highlight the financial challenges faced by ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families.

During the simulation, students took on the roles of individuals and families struggling to afford necessities such as housing, childcare, food, and healthcare while navigating unexpected setbacks.

The fast-paced, emotionally charged exercise gave future nurses a deeper understanding of how social determinants of health, like income instability and limited access to resources, directly impact patient outcomes.

By participating in the ALICE simulation, UNF nursing students strengthened their empathy, critical thinking, and advocacy skills, reinforcing their commitment to providing compassionate care.

OspreyPro program prepares students for career success

OspreyPro certificate program logoOspreyPro is a four-tier certification program that equips students with essential career competencies aligned with the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) framework. The platform provides interactive modules, skill building activities, and milestone achievements that help students articulate their strengths, prepare for internships, and enhance their competitiveness in the job market.

Since its launch in Spring 2025, OspreyPro has already seen strong engagement from students across majors and continues to grow as a signature element of UNF’s career readiness initiative.

To date, approximately 150 students have completed all four badges, and more than 15,000 students have earned at least one badge since 2022, when Career Quest, the first badge in the series, was introduced. UNF Career Services is also actively collaborating with faculty and departments across all colleges to integrate OspreyPro into academic courses and student development initiatives.
