Jacksonville Teacher Residency Frequently Asked Questions
We have worked with a number of students over the years who have shown interest in the Jacksonville Teacher Residency program. During this time, we often get asked the same questions. Many of the commonly asked questions concerning JTR at UNF are listed below.
For additional questions, don't hesitate to email Dr. Wanda Lastrapes at JTR@unf.edu.

When do students need to have the Professional Education exam completed?
Before graduation, so during the second summer A session. -
For students who pursue the Elementary Education route, when will they need to have their Subject Area completed?
You will want to attempt the Subject Area during the Spring semester, and pass it before graduation. -
Is the GRE or GK Exam still a requirement?
No, the GRE and GK Exams are no longer requirements. The Florida Teacher Subject Area Exams (SAE) for Secondary 6-12 & Middle Grades Math/Science (5-9) is the only test required for admission to UNF Graduate School. -
If a student has internship in the Summer of 2022 and doesn't graduate until August 2022, then they wouldn't be eligible for the JTR cohort of 2022-2023, correct?
That is correct; students graduating in the Summer would be eligible for the following cohort, in this example, Cohort 10 – 2023 – 2024. -
If a student has a temporary Florida teaching license, does that disqualify them from being eligible for JTR?
No, they are eligible for JTR which will provide them with a professional license if they are seeking secondary certification. -
I am going somewhere exciting next summer, can I skip the summer portion of the program?
No, JTR MAT is a cohort model. -
When does the $23,000 stipend start being allocated to students?
A summer fellowship will be distributed in May, approximately $5,000. The remainder will be disbursed bi-weekly from Aug 2022 – July 2023. -
In what ways can the education award be used?
The Segal Education Award is currently $6,195 and can be used to repay current or future federal student loans. It is available after graduation (2022) and is paid directly to the institution. -
Is there anything that can be done for out-of-state students in terms of tuition, financial aid, or waivers?
JTR residents who are classified as non-Florida residents for tuition purposes are eligible for an out-of-state tuition reduction. This is not a waiver, nor does it classify you as a Florida resident for tuition purposes. The Out-of-State Tuition Reduction for Fellowships Form must be submitted to the Graduate School for the reduction to be applied. -
Beyond the JTR stipend, if a student also receives a military extension stipend, can that affect the student in any way in terms of receiving all of the stipends?
This is a question for Financial Aid. For more information please visit the Financial Aid website -
If a student receives loans, will that affect them in any way in terms of the stipend?
In the past residents’ financial aid has not been negatively impacted by the stipend/fellowship. However, it is highly recommended that students speak to a representative in the Financial Aid Office to discuss their financial aid package(s) and options.
