Supporting Student Success at UNF

The Success Advocacy program at the University of North Florida provides additional support to students who may be facing academic or institutional challenges that could affect their retention, timely progression, and graduation. Our team of dedicated advocates work closely with students, faculty, and staff to identify and address both individual and systemic needs.

How We Help:

  • Proactive outreach and intervention: We identify students who may be at risk and connect them with the resources they need to succeed.
  • Individualized support: We work with students to develop personalized academic action plans that address their specific needs and goals.
  • Collaboration with campus partners: We work with faculty, advisors, and other campus departments to ensure that students have access to all the resources they need to succeed.
  • Program evaluation and advocacy: We continuously evaluate our programs and policies to ensure they are effective and advocate for improvements that will benefit all students.

Support and Advocacy

Individual Support:

  • Proactive identification: Our team actively identifies students who might benefit from additional support, ensuring early intervention and personalized guidance.
  • Referrals: Students can be referred to our program by advisors, faculty, and staff for targeted assistance with specific academic or institutional challenges.
  • Personalized academic action plans: We work closely with each student to develop a customized plan tailored to their unique needs and goals, providing them with the tools and resources necessary to thrive.

Institutional Advocacy

  • Program and policy evaluation: We continuously assess university programs and policies to identify areas for improvement that will enhance student success across the entire institution.
  • Collaborative recommendations: We work together with diverse campus departments to develop evidence-based recommendations for administrators, advocating for positive change that benefits all students.
  • Data-driven insights: We gather and analyze comprehensive data to inform our program development and ensure we are allocating resources effectively to support student success.

By combining proactive individual support with effective systemic advocacy, the Success Advocacy program plays a vital role in empowering students to reach their full potential and achieve their academic goals at UNF.

  • What is the difference between an Academic Advisor and a Success Advocate?

    Academic Advisors:

    • Manage a specific group of students based on major or classification.
    • Advise students on course selection, major exploration, and degree requirements.

    Success Advocates:

    • Proactively identify students who may be at risk of falling behind academically.
    • Advocate for students facing personal or academic challenges that impact their progress.
    • Collaborate with students to develop personalized academic action plans to achieve their academic goals.
  • How can faculty and staff work with a Success Advocate to support students?
    • Refer students: Encourage students facing academic or personal difficulties to contact the Success Advocate for support. You can refer students by submitting an Academic Alert through myNest or email successadvocacy@unf.edu.
    • Provide information: Share relevant information about the student's academic progress and challenges with the Success Advocate. This will help them develop a comprehensive support plan.
    • Collaborate on solutions: Work together with the Success Advocate to find solutions for the student's specific needs. This could involve coordinating academic support services, adjusting course schedules, or connecting the student with campus resources.
  • When should I refer a student to the Success Advocate?

Consider referring a student to the Success Advocate if they are an undergraduate student and meet any of the following criteria:

    Need help:

    • Building academic skills like time management, study habits, or note-taking.
    • Exploring options for their desired major.
