Computer Science High School Teachers Certificate

Certificate Description 

UNF will implement Teachers Enhancing Computational Thinking (TECt): Preparing Northeast Florida’s Secondary Teachers to Foster Computational Thinking in Computer Science, a program designed to build on current collaborative initiatives to prepare teachers to teach computer science courses through professional development and coursework leading to state certification in computer science. In addition to explaining the fundamentals of computing, these teachers will be showing their students the merits of problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity.

The program will engage multiple partners from the university, Duval County public schools and the Northeast Florida STEM2 Hub, along with computer science teachers and experts in education, computer science and business.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the certificate will be able to:

  • Implement foundational knowledge and skills for the teaching of CS and computational thinking content in U.S. classrooms
  • Produce effective and appropriate interdisciplinary CS curriculum for students in the post-secondary setting
  • Design and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments for the learning of CS and computational thinking
  • Use a bank of resources for teaching computer science in high school, including course materials, lab assignments, class activities, and websites.
  • Conduct research in computer science education and apply it to the teaching process and in the classroom.
