Perry Weather Heat Lab opens at UNF's Korey Stringer Institute

Perry Weather Heat Lab on UNF campusThe University of North Florida opened the Perry Weather Heat Lab at UNF’s Korey Stringer Institute (KSI) this week. The lab will be a hub of research on how extreme heat affects the body, informing real-world protocols and policies.

The event brought together university leaders, researchers, community partners and athletes on campus in recognition of a new chapter in a national effort to ensure no one dies from a preventable heat-related illness.

Founded in 2010 at the University of Connecticut (UConn) following the death of NFL Pro Bowl offensive lineman Korey Stringer, who collapsed during training camp and died of exertional heat stroke, KSI has spent 16 years producing the research, policies and protocols that have reshaped how sports organizations, the military and employers manage heat risk.

KSI at UNF opened in fall 2025 and is its first satellite location expansion beyond UConn, driven by Jacksonville’s year-round heat, large military presence, growing professional sports ecosystem and significant outdoor labor workforce.

UNF recognized as a sustainable campus

John A. Delaney Student Union building on UNF campusUNF has officially been certified as a sustainable campus as of May 6 by the association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

This certification meaningfully supports UNF's aspiration to become a Top 100 Public University in the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings. Notably, 14 of the top 15 public institutions on this list have earned a sustainability designation under the AASHE program. Sustainability and environmental performance are increasingly important factors for prospective students when selecting a university. This recognition reinforces UNF's commitment to environmental stewardship and institutional excellence for both current and prospective students.

This milestone was achieved thanks to the efforts of the UNF Sustainability Committee, UNF's leadership and administration, and the collective efforts of our campus community.

In addition, UNF successfully met the eligibility deadline for inclusion in the Princeton Review's Guide to Green Colleges. Should UNF be selected for inclusion, this would present another valuable institutional achievement.
