The UNF Writing Center offers writing support for graduate students across disciplines, from education and English to business and nursing, both in person and virtually via Microsoft Teams. Whether you are starting from scratch on a new assignment or deep in the revision of a dissertation chapter, our consultants are here to work through ideas and help you develop your writing approach.
Working With Us
Setting Expectations
Our consultants are well read and trained across a variety of academic disciplines, but they are not methodologists or field-specific experts. They focus on aspects of your writing, not the content within it.
If you need help with conceptual or theoretical materials, methods or sourcing, reach out to your faculty or a reference librarian.
Our consultants focus on writing style, disciplinary conventions, synthesizing ideas, matching language to arguments and satisfying common reader expectations.
What to Expect
When you visit, your consultant will:
- ●Discuss your idea so they understand your overall goal
- ●Focus on discrete parts of your paper rather than the entire document
- ●Identify examples of writing concerns and help you practice addressing them
Our consultants will not:
- ●Copyedit or proofread every writing issue in a document
- ●Offer feedback on conceptual or theoretical aspects of your project
Writing Resources
Useful Tips
When possible, email us a copy of the work you would like to discuss before your appointment. Be sure to include your name and the date and time of your session so your consultant receives your material in advance. Reading longer writing ahead of your meeting allows us to spend more time working directly with you.
Note: For longer projects such as a thesis or dissertation, we recommend scheduling a series of appointments across the semester rather than a single session.

If you need line-by-line edits or remarks, we can connect you with individuals who perform such paid work. Please note that the Writing Center does not underwrite, countersign or guarantee any work performed outside its office by suggested editors, and we cannot guarantee editor availability.
