Bilingual Digital Humanities Program

Overview

The Undergraduate Program in Bilingual Digital Humanities prepares students with advanced research, writing, critical thinking, technology and project management skills in two languages. The program offers students the opportunity to explore intersections between technology and literary, linguistic, cultural, and historical studies, with an emphasis on understanding connections between differing cultural traditions.

Students participating in this program complete:

  1. A first major in Africana studiesanthropology, art historyEnglishhistory, interdisciplinary studies, international studiesphilosophy, or religious studies
  2. a second major in either French and Francophone Studies or Spanish, and
  3. the minor in Digital Humanities.

In the future, additional majors may be included for option 1.

To learn about opportunities and events, join the Bilingual Digital Humanities Canvas group.

Advantages

Participants will be allowed to double count up to two eligible courses (6 credit hours) between their two majors,* and may also double count up to five courses (15 credit hours) between the minor in DH and those two majors.** The circumstances related to double-counting vary somewhat, according to the combination of majors:

  • Africana Studies + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in Africana Studies is 36 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours. Because the program of study for French and Francophone Studies includes numerous courses that also appear on the program of study for Africana Studies, a student may potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • Anthropology + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in Anthropology is 36 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 31 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • Art History + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in Art History is 30 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 75 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 54 hours.
  • English + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in English is 36 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • History + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in History is 36 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with 60 hours or fewer. Because the program of study for French and Francophone Studies includes numerous courses offered by the Department of History, a student may potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • Interdisciplinary Studies + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in Interdisciplinary Studies is 36 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 31 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours. Because of the flexibility built into the Interdisciplinary Studies major, a student whose IDS program of study included multiple courses related to French and Francophone Studies could potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • International Studies + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in International Studies is 33 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 78 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 57 hours. Because the program of study for French and Francophone Studies includes numerous courses that also appear on the program of study for International Studies, a student may potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • Philosophy + French and Francophone Studies + DH minor. The BA in Philosophy is 33 hours, the BA in French and Francophone Studies is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 78 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 57 hours.
  • Africana Studies + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Africana Studies is 36 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • Anthropology + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Anthropology is 36 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 31 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • Art History + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Art History is 30 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 75 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 54 hours.
  • English + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in English is 36 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • History + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in History is 36 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 81 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours.
  • Interdisciplinary Studies + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Interdisciplinary Studies is 36 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 31 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 60 hours. Because of the flexibility built into the Interdisciplinary Studies major, a student whose IDS program of study included multiple Spanish courses could potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • International Studies + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in International Studies is 33 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 78 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 57 hours. Because the program of study for Spanish includes numerous courses that also appear on the program of study for International Studies, a student may potentially double-count between the two majors more than the two courses specified by this description.
  • Philosophy + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Philosophy is 33 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 78 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 57 hours.
  • Religious Studies + Spanish + DH minor. The BA in Religious Studies is 30 hours, the BA in Spanish is 30 hours, and the minor in DH is 15 hours (for a total of 75 hours). Through this program, a student could complete both majors and the minor with as few as 54 hours.

The total number of hours for each combination above should be understood to consist of mostly, but not always entirely, upper-level hours.***

Students in this program have the opportunity to participate in Honors in the Major in both of their respective majors, as available, provided they meet the criteria for acceptance, and in many cases may be able to complete most or all the requirements for Honors in the Major through their work in this program.

*These six hours should be divided evenly between the two programs in question (except in the case of French and Francophone Studies — see note on this combination of majors above).

**Students pursuing double majors are allowed 15 additional hours beyond 120 for the purposes of calculating excess hours (see the Excess Credit Hour Surcharge page on the One-Stop Student Services website for details). Students participating in this program may take advantage of this allowance. Many may not need to do so, however, because of the reduced course load made possible through the opportunities for double counting explained above.

***The BA in English, the BA in History, and the minor in Digital Humanities can all potentially involve a limited number of lower-level hours, so the total number of hours for each combination involving those programs can possibly include some lower-level hours.

Digital Projects

Collaborative Digital Projects

Accessible Classics: Digital Adaptations for People with Reading Difficulties

Accessible Classics: Digital Adaptations for People with Reading Difficulties is a collaborative project that aims at making classic literary and educational texts accessible to people with reading difficulties. The project relies on the premise that access to reading is a universal right and that inclusive education can erode the borders that segregate communities and individuals. Led by Dr. María Ángeles Fernández Cifuentes, associate professor of Spanish, this project has involved students from the UNF Spanish program as primary collaborators.

Colonial Lab

coloniaLab is an experimental workshop for the electronic edition of manuscript and rare print texts related to early Latin America. Since 2016, coloniaLab has involved over 40 UNF students in the transcription and TEI-XML markup of archival materials from the colonial period and nineteenth century.

Embroidering for Peace and Memory Digital Archive

The Embroidering for Peace and Memory Digital Archive gathers a selection of the over 600 embroidery pieces that have been created by students, faculty, staff, and community members since 2012.

OER-Immersive Multimedia Materials Project

The OER-Immersive Multimedia Materials Project aims at the design and development of Open Educational Resources (OER) in the classroom as a model to integrate community-based learning and undergraduate research in lower and upper-level courses of the Spanish Program at UNF. It specifically involves the design of immersive educational materials with a focus on Virtual Reality and reading accessibility.

Led by Dr. Johana Barrero and Dr. María Ángeles Fernández Cifuentes, the OER-Immersive Multimedia Materials Project is associated with Accessible Classics: Digital Adaptations for People with Reading Difficulties. Several students of Spanish at UNF have collaborated with Dr. Fernández Cifuentes and Dr. Barrero on this project.

Voces y Caras

Voces y Caras: Hispanic Communities of North Florida is an ongoing digital oral history project at UNF that engages heritage speakers of Spanish in documenting the experiences of the growing Hispanic/Latinx community in our region. The interviews are designed and carried out by students in SPN3351 Communication and Communities for Heritage Speakers.

Led by Dr. Constanza López, associate professor of Spanish, the project has involved nearly 200 UNF students as collaborators since beginning in 2012.
