Mathematics: Discrete Analysis

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Mathematics major with a concentration in Discrete Analysis is designed to prepare students for employment in mathematics and information analysis-related industries and government agencies, or to pursue post graduate work in mathematics, computer science or bioinformatics. The curriculum is designed to allow students to acquire a basic background in mathematics with intensive coursework in discrete mathematics and the fundamentals of computer science. Faculty strive to instill students with an appreciation for the power of mathematics and statistics as well as a desire to be lifelong learners. Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).
  • Students requiring preparation for MAC 2311 Calculus I should take MAC 1147 Precalculus. Prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L General Chemistry I with lab is completion of CHM 1025 Introduction to Chemistry or qualifying score on chemistry placement assessment. MAC 1105 College Algebra or MAC equivalent is an enforced prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L. Prerequisite for PHY 2048C Calculus-Based Physics is PHY 1028 Introduction to Physics. MAC2311 Calculus I is a prerequisite for PHY2048C.
  • Completion of MHF3202 Foundations of Mathematics is crucial to stay on-track for the Math major. Students earning a grade of B+ or higher in MHF3202 Foundations of Mathematics should consider taking MAS4301 Abstract Algebra I in Term 6. Students must create and understand proofs to succeed in MAS4301 Abstract Algebra I. MAS4301 Abstract Algebra I is one of the most challenging courses in the Math major and is typically taken in the senior year. Successful completion of two 4000 level Major Required courses are required prior to MAS4932 Capstone Experience in Math.
  • Discrete Analysis students are required to complete 6 semester hours of Major Electives. See the university catalog, or personalized Degree Evaluation for a list of approved Math Major Electives. Consult an academic advisor or Math Department chairperson regarding approval of additional Math Major Elective options.
  • As part of Major Requirements:
    • MAD3107 Discrete Mathematics is an acceptable substitute for COT3100 Computational Structures
    • Students select one course from: MAD4203 Combinatorics OR COT4111 Computational Structures II
    • Students select one course from: MAD4301 Graph Theory OR COT4560 Applied Graph Theory
    • Students select one course from: MAD4505 Discrete Biomathematics OR COT4461 Computational Biology
  • A minor is required for this degree. Students completing the concentration in Discrete Analysis must select a minor from among: mathematics intensive, biology, physics, computer science, statistics, chemistry, or professional education. The minor in professional education satisfies the minimum requirements for alternative teacher certification in the state of Florida. Students choosing this minor may use MHF3404 History of Mathematics and MTG Modern Geometry as major electives. Math majors selecting a Minor in Statistics must visit the university catalog for variations within this Minor. Students must consult the Math Department chairperson to select a different minor than listed above. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.   • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) and by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree.
