Mathematics: Applied Mathematics

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Mathematics major provides students with the background necessary to pursue quantitative careers in mathematics as well as the background to pursue more advanced degrees. The concentration in Applied Mathematics deals with the use of mathematical concepts and techniques in various fields of science and engineering. Courses are designed to educate in an appealing and thought-provoking manner. Faculty strive to instill students with an appreciation for the power of mathematics as well as a desire to be lifelong learners. Students following this concentration have ample opportunity to assemble a portfolio of courses and research experiences that will satisfy both intellectual needs and career preparation. They will be prepared for careers in government labs and agencies, banks, consulting firms, electronics and computer manufacturers, logistics companies, transportation service providers, and more. Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit theCollege of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).
  • Students requiring preparation for MAC 2311 Calculus I should take MAC 1147 Precalculus. Prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L General Chemistry I with lab is completion of CHM 1025 Introduction to Chemistry or qualifying score on chemistry placement assessment. MAC 1105 College Algebra or MAC equivalent is an enforced prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L. Prerequisite for PHY 2053/2053L Algebra-Based Physics is PHY 1028 Introduction to Physics.
  • Completion of MHF3202 Foundations of Mathematics is crucial to stay on-track for the Math major. Students must create and understand proofs to succeed in MAA4211 Advanced Calculus I. MAA4211 Advanced Calculus I is one of the most challenging courses in the Math major and is typically taken in the senior year. Successful completion of MAA4211 Advanced Calculus I is required prior to MAS4932 Capstone Experience in Math.
  • As part of Major Requirements, students must select 2 of the following 3 courses: MAP4341 Elementary Partial Differential Equations; MAP4103 Mathematical Modeling; or MAP4314 Dynamical Systems.
  • Math majors are required to complete 12 semester hours of Major Electives. See the university catalog, or personalized Degree Evaluation for a list of approved Major Electives for the Applied Mathematics concentration. Consult an academic advisor or Math Department chairperson regarding approval of additional Major Elective options.
  • A minor is required for this degree. Bachelor of Science students majoring in Mathematics must select a minor from among biology, physics, computer science, statistics, chemistry, economics or business. Math majors selecting a Minor in Statistics must visit the university catalog for variations within this Minor. Students must consult the Math Department chairperson to select a different minor than options listed above. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.   • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) and by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation.
