Anthropology

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Anthropology Program seeks to provide a greater understanding of humankind from a holistic perspective. Anthropology utilizes theories and methods from the natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities, to examine humankind. Anthropology helps prepare students to actively apply their knowledge and skills to the challenges of living in an increasingly interconnected, diverse global society by exposing them to a systematic, scientific and humanistic understanding of people and their cultures, including their own. Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year and Exploratory students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).

• Honors in the Major is available to Anthropology majors. Visit the Student Handbook on the Anthropology website for more information.
• All BA students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Visit the Foreign Language/Foreign Culture section of the university catalog for important information. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office.
• The Anthropology Faculty encourage students to consider taking at least two years of a foreign language as a complement to their studies. However, this is not a Program requirement, and depending on students' interests there may be Foreign Culture courses, both within and outside Anthropology, that serve this purpose equally well. Students should consult with the Anthropology Program Coordinator regarding the appropriateness of such courses and the availability of alternatives.
• Anthropology majors must select one course from: ANT4034 Theories and Issues in Cultural Anthropology (offered Spring term) OR ANT4115 Archaeological Research Strategies (offered Fall term) and one course from ANT4497 Ethnographic Methods OR ANT4083 Quantitative Methods in Anthropology. ANT4497 is offered every Fall term and ANT4083 is offered every Spring term. These courses can be taken in any order (subject to availability).
• A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.
• Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) and by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
• A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation.
