Study Abroad with UNF’s Nutrition and Dietetics Community
Study Abroad
UNF’s study abroad programs provide transformative academic, cultural and personal growth experiences for nutrition and dietetics students. Through international learning opportunities, students explore global nutrition practices, public health challenges and cultural perspectives that shape food systems around the world.
Past programs have taken students across continents to examine how culture, tradition, environment and community influence dietary patterns and health outcomes. These immersive experiences broaden perspectives and strengthen students’ ability to practice nutrition in diverse and global contexts.

Brooks College of Health has previously offered a 14-day immersive program in Corciano, Italy, designed to explore the social, historical and cultural influences on food, nutrition and society.
In Italy, students examine the Mediterranean diet within its cultural context, gaining insight into how regional traditions shape public health and daily life. Experiences have included visits to hilltop towns and engagement with local producers of olive oil, bread, pecorino cheese, fresh produce and artisanal legumes.
Academic components have featured lectures from subject matter experts, introductory Italian language instruction and hands-on cooking classes, blending scholarly insight with cultural immersion.
Participating in the Brooks College of Health Nutrition and Dietetics Italy study abroad trip was an unforgettable experience. The culture, history and culinary practices were amazing. This experience will always hold a special place in my heart. I highly recommend this program to everyone.

Japan: Blue Zones, Spirituality and Longevity
Brooks College of Health has also offered immersive study abroad experiences in Japan, exploring the connection between diet, lifestyle, spirituality and longevity.
Programs have focused on principles associated with Blue Zones, regions recognized for exceptional longevity, and how traditional Japanese dietary patterns, cultural practices and community engagement contribute to holistic well-being.
Students have engaged with the spiritual dimensions of nutrition through visits to historic shrines in Kyoto and participation in guided journeys along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Through interactive discussions, cultural site visits and experiential learning, students explored Japan’s integrated approach to wellness, from mindful movement and plant-based meals to longstanding traditions that support vibrant living.
Studying in Japan with the Brooks College of Health really brought my textbooks to life, where history, philosophy and nutrition were not just subjects but lived experiences. This journey deepened my academic curiosity and inspired a lifelong pursuit of learning beyond the classroom.
