Mother and son to graduate from UNF together

By Mattison Hansen

Janelle and Julian Hooks posing on a bench on the UNF campusWhen Julian Hooks was young, doctors cautioned that as an autistic child he would struggle socially and with expressing himself.

But Julian excelled – in school, in making lifelong friends and finding a way to express himself through art.

This April, he will receive a statewide award in recognition of his success as a student. And in May, he graduates from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in drawing and painting.

But Julian won’t be the only Hooks graduating in May. His mother, Janelle Hooks, is earning her Master of Social Work the same day.

Graduating students soaring toward a bright future

Swarnima Naithani

By Joy Batteh-Freiha

Swarnima Naithani headshotGrowing up in Northern India, Swarnima "Tina" Naithani watched as her mother lived with epilepsy.

“I saw the care that was given to my mother who has epilepsy, and it inspired me to help others in the same situation,” explained Naithani.

She knew from an early age that she wanted to major in physical therapy. She earned her undergraduate degree in India and completed her internship at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, after which she worked for two and a half years in a clinical setting.

She recognized that the need for quality physical therapy was great in her home country.

“There is a shortage of physical therapists in India,” Naithani said. “So, it’s a demanding job in which I cared for patients with musculoskeletal injuries, postsurgical cases, pediatric conditions in both inpatient and outpatient environments, and took on private clients as well.”

When she decided to continue her education, she heard about the University of North Florida. She knew it was a perfect fit for her when she read about research from one of the professors.

Now 28, Naithani is earning her Master of Health Science in Kinesiology and Lifestyle Medicine this May.

Sayyada Harry

By Amanda Ennis

UNF student Sayyada Harry standing in front of a BMW carA decimated car slumped in the middle of the backyard – twisted frame, parts ripped off, paint scorched. As her father moved around the wreck with quiet confidence, Sayyada Harry patiently watched him rebuild the vehicle piece by piece.

Those core memories of helping her father breathe new life into old, battered machines would fuel a lifelong passion for engineering.

It was her time at the University of North Florida that would connect her with faculty, staff, tools and opportunities to pursue that passion. She earned her mechanical engineering bachelor’s in May 2025 and continued at UNF as part of an accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s program.

Today, Harry is doing an internship with her dream company – Mercedes-Benz – while also finishing important research on a life-saving cooling method for newborns with specific brain injuries.

She graduates in May with her master’s degree in mechanical engineering, fueled with determination for the future.

Now a senior at the Hicks Honors College, Luedeke has already set herself apart by earning two national research awards, studying abroad, leading a cyber security club on campus, completing two internships and currently working on her third.

Her success is due to her own determination, supported by guidance and mentorship from UNF faculty and staff.

In May, Luedeke will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in leadership.
