UNF breaks ground on Student Success Center

By Amanda Ennis

UNF Student Success Center renderingThe University of North Florida broke ground today, Thursday, Oct. 23, on its new Student Success Center, which will house various student services and reimagine how students connect, study and succeed. It is projected to open in mid-2027.

UNF President Moez Limayem, Florida House Speaker Designate Sam Garrison and others delivered remarks.

“UNF's newest expansion project is strategically designed with student success at its core,” said UNF President Moez Limayem. “The Student Success Center reflects UNF’s commitment to providing every Osprey with the advising and support resources they need to thrive academically and personally.”

UNF is grateful for the tireless effort from Speaker Designate Garrison, Senator Clay Yarborough, Representative Wyman Duggan and others for sponsoring the bill to fund the building and for the continued legislative support.

Depiction of the UNF Student Success CenterThe Student Success Center will be positioned at the heart of UNF’s campus, between the Thomas G. Carpenter Library and Fine Arts Center. The three-story, 60,000-square-foot building will enhance student success by bringing essential academic services and vibrant study spaces together under one roof.

By consolidating the existing learning and advising centers into one location on campus, the Student Success Center will create a flexible, synergistic learning and studying environment that will encourage shared collaborative space among students and faculty. The building will house services including academic advising, student success, career services, tutoring, supplemental instruction, help centers such as the Writing and Math labs, collaborative study spaces, lounge areas and a full-sized Chick-fil-A. The former locations of these services will be repurposed.

The building exterior borrows from existing campus elements using University branding as well as extending the modern stone aesthetic along the western edge of campus and adjacent to the Carpenter Library. The interior design reflects unique materials and spatial moments reflective of an osprey nest and wing to reinforce the unique biodiversity and wetland habitat of campus.

Inside digital model of the UNF Student Success CenterThe building is designed by Schenkel Shultz, a Central Florida architectural and interior design studio with deep collegiate design experience, and built by Ajax Building Company, the same company that built Osprey Ridge residence hall and Skinner-Jones Hall.

“This project presents an incredible opportunity to positively impact the student experience at UNF,” said Desai, design lead and partner at Schenkel Shultz. “We are excited to collaborate with the university to create a showcase space that fosters creativity, collaboration and personal growth among students.”

The project was made possible by PECO funding from the state legislature.

Faculty Feature: Dr. Beyza Aslan

By Joy Batteh-Freiha

A vibrant tapestry of yarn and numbers that tells a story and stretches across continents, generations and disciplines was on exhibit in September at the Jessie Ball duPont Center in downtown Jacksonville.

Dr. Beyza AslanIt’s the story of Dr. Beyza Aslan, University of North Florida associate professor of mathematics and statistics — a mathematician, educator, artist and mother whose journey from childhood crocheting to mathematical artistry is reshaping how we see math.

Her goal is to show that math is accessible in everything we see; it’s beautiful and can be fun.

Growing up in Turkey, Aslan learned to crochet before she could even read.

“In my culture, young girls are taught crafts by the women in their families, not just as hobbies, but as traditions tied to marriage dowries,” said Aslan.

Yet for Aslan, it wasn’t only about preparing for marriage; she found joy in creating outfits for her dolls, discovering a peaceful rhythm in the loops and stitches that calmed her young mind.

After decades of academic rigor as an undergraduate at the Middle Eastern Technical Institute and later at the University of Florida where she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics, marriage, raising children and building a career, crafting and crocheting fell by the wayside.

Crochet art pieces on a deskBut in January 2020, at a mathematics conference, Aslan picked up a book on crochet and math that piqued her interest.

Then came COVID-19. Isolated at home with her two children, she returned to crochet not as a pastime, but as a lifeline. Circular patterns, polygons and Islamic tilings began to emerge from her hooks, each stitch a meditation on geometry.

Crocheting became more than therapy, it became a bridge between her mathematical mind and artistic soul. She began designing her own patterns, assigning stitches to angles, visualizing 3D topology and even crocheting a soccer ball composed of hexagons and pentagons.

“Crochet makes math tangible,” Aslan explained.  “You can touch it, twist it, and see it from every angle.”

Crochet art figures on displayToday, she’s on a mission to transform the perception of mathematics from fear to fiercelessly fun by showing that math isn’t just a subject, it’s a vibrant part of everything we see and do, beginning with her exhibit at The Jessie.

“This exhibit is the start,” said Aslan. “It gave me an entry to promote and change the attitude about math. All students must take math at UNF regardless of their major, and in alignment with Student Success, I want to build upon the success of this exhibit and show that math is fun — there’s a softer side to math.”

While the exhibit may be over, Aslan’s work is just beginning. After captivating students and educators with her crochet-infused mathematics showcase, she is now turning her attention to something even more ambitious — building a curriculum that blends fiber arts with mathematical exploration for her UNF students with plans to launch in 2027.

“I envision my students of all majors creating crochet in any form of fiber art pieces reflecting mathematics to be exhibited in campus galleries, embracing experiential learning at its finest,” Aslan said.

To change the perception of math in young learners, Aslan is planning to take her exhibit on the road to area middle and high schools as well.

Faculty-led study to advance laser-based measurement technology

Dr. Will Jones headshotThe University of North Florida has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to advance laser-based measurement technology in order to find more accurate and reliable chemical measurements across diverse scientific fields.

Dr. Willis Jones, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, will lead the study that will pursue groundbreaking advances in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a powerful but often limited analytical technique.

LIBS uses a high-powered laser to create a small plasma that reveals the elemental compositions of solids, liquids and gases with minimal preparation. While powerful, the method is hindered by “noisy” data, poor reproducibility and sensitivity to different sample types, such as soils versus wastewater, which can distort results.

To overcome these challenges, Jones and his team of student researchers will build a custom LIBS system and pioneer new calibration strategies designed to improve trace-level analyte detection.

Osprey Profile: Sofia Dawson and Kendall Newbold

Before North Florida volleyball's 2025 season started, freshmen Sofia Dawson and Kendall Newbold rolled down Myrtle Street to Cap's on the Water in St. Augustine, to enjoy sunset views from a wooden deck at a waterfront restaurant.

UNF volleyball players smiling and prayingIt's a ritual the duo has grown accustomed to in their short time at North Florida, describing it as a setting for the two Atlanta natives to get away from the demanding schedules collegiate volleyball presents.

However, the freshman setter, Dawson, and freshman opposite hitter, Newbold, have a history that dates further than an impromptu trip to watch sunsets and eat sweet treats.

Dawson and Newbold first met while playing 15U club volleyball together for the A5 Club organization in Atlanta. While at a team hotel for a club tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana, Dawson asked Newbold a question that altered the course of their relationship on and off the court for years to come.

"Knowing that you're [going] to college with somebody that you've known for four years already, it's just a comfort feeling," Newbold said. "Knowing you have somebody to talk to from home just makes you feel so much more safe and comfortable [and that] you're not in it alone."

Since they were 15 years old, Dawson and Newbold bonded not just through being teammates on the court, but through shared experiences off the court. In club tournaments, they stayed in the same hotels, laughing late into the night, creating memories that went beyond the court.

The dynamic freshman duo were no strangers to finding success on the court prior to North Florida. Dawson and Newbold placed third at AAU Nationals in their first season competing for A5 Club. Newbold was named the 2024 Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 6A Region 2 Player of the Year and Dawson earned a 2024 GHSA 4A Region 5 Player of the Year nod, respectively.

Since they've become Ospreys, the duo consistently displays sheer dominance on the court for North Florida.

As of Oct. 13, Dawson ranks fifth in the ASUN in total assists and second on the team in digs. Newbold has been sensational as well, earning ASUN Freshman of the Week honors on Sept. 29 following back-to-back matches with double-digit kills.

Music

Danny Gottlieb, professor, performed in New York at the memorial service on Oct. 12 for Dr. Jack Kleinsinger and completed the UNF Foundation grant archive of the world's greatest collection of live jazz concerts. Kleinsinger was a New York assistant District Attorney, who loved jazz music, and in 1973 decided to produce a jazz concert. That event started 50 years of jazz concert production, with production of more than 330 performances. Gottlieb first performed at one of Kleinsinger’s concerts in 1976, and in 2012 received a UNF Foundation grant to copy and archive the audio from every concert, as well as copy more than 2,000 pages of Kleinsinger’s printed programs, photos and reviews. The material is stored in our Carpenter Library. This material is also used in Gottlieb's DL Evolution of Jazz course, which he has taught since 2007. Kleinsinger donated his archive to UNF and awarded him an honorary doctorate of letters for his contribution. Kleinsinger recently passed away at age 89, and Gottlieb performed on drums at the service as part of his memorial tribute. What makes each of these concerts so special was the fact that it featured some of the greatest names in jazz, including Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich and Dizzy Gillespie, and that Kleinsinger created each concert with a specific theme with musicians playing in combinations in which they had never performed prior. It allowed Kleinsinger to really help create unique, one-of-a-kind music for each concert. It is arguably the most unique and greatest collection of live jazz stored anywhere in the world.
