Ongoing Opportunities

Volunteer Assistant with Enviro Rights Map 

This existing project catalogs constitutional environmental rights all around the world using a dynamic, Google Maps-based interface. The next step in this project would involve updating content on the Enviro Rights Map (ERM) website to include recently amended or new constitutions. Contact Dr. Josh Gellers for more information.

Environmental (In)Justice in Jacksonville  

This existing project would involve making the environmental justice map of Jacksonville accessible (i.e. including audio recordings about the events for the visually impaired) and interactive (i.e. people could press on the map with their fingers like you can on a mall directory). For an example of a similar map, see the Environmental Justice Atlas. Contact Dr. Josh Gellers for more information. 

ColoniaLab

ColoniaLab has an ongoing need for interns who can assist in editorial tasks related to the digital publication of manuscripts and rare books in Spanish related to colonial and nineteenth-century Latin America. No prior experience with any specific technology is required. Interns generally should have completed at least one 3000-level Spanish course or have equivalent proficiency. Internship with Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center

Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center in St. Augustine has an ongoing opportunity for a student interested in digital work. Responsibilities will include the digitization of transcripts of interviews with Lincolnville residents. This is a paid opportunity ($1,500 per semester). Interested students should contact Dr. James Beasley for more information.

2021-22 Internship with Friends of the GTM Reserve

The Friends of the GTM Reserve is the 501(c)(3) citizen support organization for the GTM Research Reserve. Their mission is to support and enhance the research, education, and stewardship of the Reserve through volunteer initiatives, fundraising, and community partnerships. The Friends of the GTM Reserve Internship Program is for students interested in nonprofit management careers to learn about the inner workings of a regionally-based environmental/conservation nonprofit organization. 

2022 Spring Internship with the Florida Southwestern Railway Omeka Project

The story begins with two brothers, Fred and Floyd Perry, who dreamed of becoming railroad tycoons. So much so, that they spent seven years building their very own locomotive in the backyard of Fred’s small house at 44. S. Whitney St. in St. Augustine. In a letter dated Jan. 7, 1954, Fred introduced his friends to the Perry brothers’ newest venture: The Florida Southwestern Railway. The Florida Southwestern Railway Omeka Project will bring this story to the public by creating a digital exhibit site using the Omeka platform. This internship program aims to provide students with a meaningful, well-rounded experience with digital humanities intersecting historical research and digital access to information. Selected interns will work with library staff to research, choose images, and write exhibit labels to bring this compelling story to light. Students interested in this project must be able to commit to a minimum requirement of 10-15 hours a week, for a minimum of 12 weeks. However, not being able to work within these parameters will not exclude a potential applicant from being considered. Students are responsible for meeting their required hours, and consistently updating the Digital Collections Librarian on their progress. We encourage onsite research to use the SAHS Research Library resources, but research may be conducted off-site through use of school resources. Also, any writing for the project may be done offsite, and may be submitted to the Digital Collections Librarian through email.

2022 Spring Internship with The St. Johns County Veterans Oral History Project

St. Johns County is home to thousands of current and former service members of the U.S. Armed Forces. We seek to preserve the stories of local veterans and the impact of their service on their lives and the lives of others around them while also expanding our own digital collections. This internship program aims to provide students with a meaningful, well-rounded experience with digital humanities intersecting historical research and digital access to information. Selected interns will work with library staff to transcribe oral histories and create a summary and keywords for online findability. Students interested in this project must be able to commit to a minimum requirement of 10-15 hours a week, for a minimum of 12 weeks. However, not being able to work within these parameters will not exclude a potential applicant from being considered. Students are responsible for meeting their required hours, and consistently updating the Digital Collections Librarian on their progress.
