Biology: Ecology and Evolution Biology

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Ecology and Evolution Biology concentration is designed to provide a broad background in biology with a special emphasis on the evolution and ecology of organisms. This concentration is especially suited for students interested in pursuing graduate education or research careers focused in ecological and evolutionary fields.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year and Exploratory students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an academic advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies.
Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).
  • The Biology major is selective admission. Program admission requires a decision by a college administrator or faculty member. Students are not guaranteed admission into this major, and cannot progress into Term 5 (61-75 hours) or take upper-level (3000/4000) Biology courses, until admitted into this major. Find specific admission criteria for this major on your Degree Evaluation, college website, university catalog or consult your academic advisor. In addition to meeting the university admission criteria, applicants must be junior status (earned a minimum of 60 semester hours) and must complete four program prerequisite courses with a minimum of two B grades and two C grades in General Biology I with Lab, General Biology II with Lab, General Chemistry I with Lab and General Chemistry II with Lab.
  • Students must take both the Organic Chemistry I/Organic Chemistry II course sequence AND the Physics I/Physics II course sequence. One course sequence will satisfy state-common Prerequisite Requirements and the other course sequence will satisfy the Biology Core Requirements.
  • Admitted students must adhere to the Biology Major Retention Policy.
  • Visit the Biology Department webpage for a complete list of Biology prerequisites and Biology Major Electives. Students requiring preparation for MAC 2311 Calculus I take MAC 1147 Precalculus. Prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L General Chemistry I with lab is completion of CHM 1025 Introduction to Chemistry or qualifying score on chemistry placement assessment. MAC 1105 College Algebra or MAC equivalent is an enforced prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L. Prerequisite for PHY 2053/2053L Algebra-Based Physics is PHY 1028 Introduction to Physics. Pre-calculus (or a combination of College Algebra and Trigonometry) is required prior to taking PHY2053/2053L Algebra Based Physics I.
  • Students are encouraged to take BSC2991 Introduction to the Biology Major (1 credit hour) as a Free Elective.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree in Biology. Students should consult with an academic advisor regarding their Free Elective hours.
  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) and by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • Students following the Ecology and Evolution Biology Concentration must complete a minimum 11 hours of Biology Major Electives. See Degree Evaluation for list of Major Elective options, and check the university catalog for prerequisites for individual courses. For additional information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.
  • Visit the Biology Department Course Matrix for a listing of when required Biology courses and Biology major electives are offered. See the university catalog for prerequisites to individual courses.
