UNF recognizes two public service alumni for outstanding contributions
The University of North Florida honored local changemakers at the second annual Celebrating Public Service event last Wednesday. In honor of National Public Service Recognition Week, the event brings together students, alumni, faculty and community leaders to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Northeast Florida region.
Hosted by the UNF’s Mater of Public Administration (MPA) program and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, the evening spotlighted two distinguished MPA graduates for their exceptional contributions to Northeast Florida.
This year’s Excellence in Public Service awards were presented to Robert Peek (‘05) in the public sector category and Jimmy Orth (‘03) in the nonprofit sector category.
Peek, the chief commercial officer at JAXPORT, was recognized for his pivotal role in expanding the port’s business operations and strengthening the region’s economic development. Having joined JAXPORT in 1995, Peek has held various leadership positions throughout his career. He currently oversees the port’s marketing and sales initiatives, helping position Northeast Florida as a thriving logistics and transportation hub. Peek’s contributions extend beyond his professional role, as he continues to serve the community through leadership positions in several public and nonprofit organizations, offering his expertise to benefit the broader region.
Orth, executive director of St. Johns Riverkeeper, was honored for his passionate advocacy and tireless efforts to protect the St. Johns River, one of the region’s most vital natural resources. In his role, Orth oversees a range of activities, from fundraising and staffing to program development and public outreach, all while supporting the Riverkeeper’s field operations. A Jacksonville native, Orth brings decades of environmental leadership to the position, having previously served with the Sierra Club and earned recognition for his contributions from Volunteer Jacksonville through its Nature of Caring award.
In addition to recognizing these accomplished alumni, the event celebrated the academic and service achievements of current students in UNF’s undergraduate political science program as well as its Master of Arts in International Affairs and Master of Public Administration programs.
