UNF Student Wellness Complex hosts ribbon cutting

New Osprey mural at the Student Wellness ComplexThe University of North Florida’s Department of Recreation and Wellness hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Student Wellness Complex today, Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. to showcase the completion of the flooring renovation project that started in November. 

The Student Wellness Complex houses the largest fitness center in northeast Florida and is home to the RecWell Department office. Open to individuals of any fitness level, interests or abilities, the complex offers many activities to enhance health and wellness levels and provide lifelong fitness skills for the future. 

After over 2.5 million visits, the SWC underwent some much-needed upgrades including additional equipment for fitness opportunities and some aesthetic updates, such as a mural of flying ospreys. 

New equipment in the Student Wellness ComplexOn the second level of the SWC, there are 275 exercise stations and 27,000 square feet of fitness floor space. Out of this, the rubber flooring has increased by 40% and now covers 14,700 square feet, while 6,900 square feet of free-weight area has been equipped with 4-layered impact/sound-absorbing flooring and the rest of the floor has brand new carpet. 

The Dottie Dorion Fitness Center has been supplied with new equipment including 5,400 Ibs. of bumper plates, 525 Ibs. of dumbbells and 9 half-racks with inlay lifting platforms. 25 outdated machines have been traded in towards the purchase of new ones, including treadmills, step mills and cardio and weight machines.
