Rising star from UNF joins Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble

Tavian Cox headshotFor Tavian Cox, the spotlight has never been brighter as he takes a leap toward his dreams in the field of music.

Music was an integral part of Tavian’s life from an early age, beginning from the pews at his family’s church in Green Cove Springs, Fla., where his grandfather was the pastor.

"According to my family, I started singing before I was speaking in full sentences," said Tavian.

In fifth grade, he was given the opportunity to perform a Michael Jackson solo in his school chorus, an experience that brought him to life on stage.

Throughout his childhood, Tavian believed music would shape his future and have a place in his career as an adult. That belief never wavered.

When it came time to choose which college he wanted to attend, the University of North Florida’s School of Music was Tavian’s top choice.

“Music has always been a big part of my life, and I wanted to be somewhere where my passion could grow and be cared for.” Tavian said.

"They gave me a sense of belonging that I knew I didn't want to search for elsewhere." he said.

However, Tavian didn’t limit his experiences to just music while he was on campus. His vibrant and outgoing personality made him a natural to engage with various social groups on campus, including Pride and the Black Student Union, expanding his network and fostering meaningful connections.

Building on his accomplishments at UNF, Tavian said that after graduation he will be joining the illustrious Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer, renowned globally as an ‘orchestra of voices’. With over one million recordings sold and countless live performances around the world, Chanticleer stands as a symbol of vocal brilliance.

Joining this vocal ensemble has been a lifelong dream for Tavian. The opportunity to audition for Chanticleer arose in 2021, and while the group expressed admiration for his talent, Tavian decided to instead complete his music degree at UNF.

“This year, I received an email encouraging me to audition again, and when a Grammy Award ensemble asks you to audition again – you audition again.” Tavian emphasized.

Tavian will be the youngest member of the group by at least four years.

Looking ahead, Tavian envisions a future filled with musical growth and exploration, through Chanticleer and other avenues that may emerge.

"I see myself being in Chanticleer until my heart and spirit tell me to move on. I don't like to rush things anymore, and if a time comes, then it will come," said Tavian.

Tavian will be walking at UNF’s 2023 summer commencement on August 4, cheered on by his parents, grandparents, and little sister, as well as his friends and peers.
